Just wondering, i like the look of the off road / motocross style helmets, and i was wondering if they are safe for on road usage? Some of them are both DOT and Snell. |

Sure, but you have to take off the visor! ! It catches alot of wind and if you turn your head over your shoulder, it will want to yank your head right off your shoulders ! ! which can upset your balance greatly, especially speeds over 55mph,And a motocross bike helmet, well it just doesnt look right without a visor ... Yeah, they're safe, but offroad helmets are noisier than hell at speed. |

I've been thinking about getting one of these:
It's the Arai XD. |

i've got one of these; http://www.helmetsetc.com/images/helmets/bell/trac ker-red-multi.jpg and have been over 80 mph with it without any problems, i'm sure if i looked up at that speed the visor would get ripped off but it hasn't yet. |

I have an Arai 'Tour - X' - they are called here. I'm a bit of a gorilla , but I find It's fine up to 80mph in a cross wind. After that the peak tends to act like a bit of a spoiler, still usable, but it would be tiring for extended stints at over 80mph. Legal speeds it's excellent. Got the black visor. They're using my winter kit on the local Arai site:

I used an MX Full Face for a couple of years with my dual sport. I've had her up to 100mph, and yes, it is very noisy. The visor issue didn't really bother me too much, but it is noticeable. What I did like was on hot days, it was pretty well vented. The biggest downer for me was when it rained. Ouch. |
