I was wondering... as soon as I start my 2003 XB9R up, the fuel pump whines, and it never stops until I turn the key off. It has been like this since day 1, but I wonder how "normal" this is? I was washing the bike today, and for some reason or another, I rocked it from side to side (with it running) and I noticed that the noise stopped when I tilted it hard to the right hand side... but came right back when brought upright. Someone please tell me this is "normal" and that there is nothing to worry about. |

It's normal. My fuel pump is louder than the exhaust. |

The fuel pump is one of 3 parts on a Buell where Locktite won't help weird noises or rattles. |

I was told by a mechanic at HD (only went there because I needed a TPS reset, and got ripped off) that my fuel pump was unusually loud and it should be replaced immediately (03 XB9R w/ 23k). I chalked it up to a money making scheme and ignored it. Then I was given a newish one (3k miles) about a year later for free so I installed it. And guess what... It sounds exactly the same. |

Huh. Mine whines very loudly when I first turn the key on, but only runs for maybe 2-3 seconds, and shuts up. If I listen very closely, I can barely make it out when the bike is running, and I have a stock muffler. Strange there would be such a difference. ~SM |

I can hear my '06 over the exhaust(stock) whether the tank is full or almost empty, seems to have grown a little louder over the last few thousand miles. Haven't noticed any loss of performance. Anybody mounted a fuel pressure gage on an XB(permanent or diagnostic)? |

I have the Buell Race can and I can ALWAYS hear my fuel pump over my exhaust. It's just as loud as my fan sometimes. I hate it. |

You can always tell people it's the turbo whine. |

My wife got new keys cut for my XB last week. I told her over the phone to check if they fit. When she turned the key and the fuel pump came on she said it scared the Hell out of her. |

Good one Spatten1, it's the turbo whine! I think I will use that next time. lol My boss at the bar I work at (who has been riding Harleys as long as I've been alive) brought it around front for me last weekend (to park it where I could see it...) and he made a comment to me about it. I guess I never really paid much attention to it until then. Like I said, it was like that since day 1. I figured it was the just the way it was supposed to be. |

Mine does the screeching noise when its in the prime mode for those 2 or 3 seconds. I read that it has to do with air getting trapped around the pump( dont ask me how this is). Some time in 05 they were upgraded. My 06 doesnt do it. |
