Hey, I need somone's opinion! I took my '06 XB12Ss in for its 5k tune up, and, come to find out, the wrong fork was on it. Came that way from the factory. The shop decides to just swap an 07 fork with it, and it doesn't match the frame. Supposedly, the 06, and 07 forks are interchangeable, but neither is working. No one seems to know what the heck is going on. Any advice on my next course of action would be greatly appreciated! |

The wrong fork? One or both? Doesn't match the frame? |

I'm also confused...how, exactly, "doesn't it work"? Or "match"? AFAIK, the only bikes that have a different fork are the now-discontinued 9SL, and the 12Scg. Shorter and IIRC thicker, different triple trees and all. We found that one out the hard way lowering a 9R for a lady... Re-reading your post...do you mean rear swingarm? *That* would explain the "not-matching" part as they are painted/coated to match either a silver (XB9) or charcoal (XB12) frame. And it could explain the "wrong" part as well, as your Ss should have the longer swingarm. If they swapped for an 07 that's a correct "long" swingarm...do they have to change the belt to a longer one? Must say, we haven't run into that one yet.... |

Hmmmmm, this has been pretty messed up. Originally, everyone at the shop was confused. I had taken the XB12Ss in for an estimate to some damage that had been done, and for its 5k tune up. They had everything put back together, and realized the front fork was leaking. They ordered a seal, and the seal didn't fit. So, they measured all the specs, and decided that the wrong fork was on the bike. Then, they were told by the big wig Harley techs, that the 07 and 06 forks were interchangeable. Then they went to put the 07 forks on, and it didn't match up to the triple tree or something like that. Anyhow, everyone has been stumped on this and they didnn't really know what to do. I just got a call this afternoon, however, and now they are saying that the information was wrong in the manuals, and they ordered the wrong part. Anyhow, I think I'm just gonna trade the thing in for an 07, they say the 07 are more standardized. I don't want to have to continue to deal with this sort of problem anytime I'm on the the road and have to pull into a dealership and have repairs done. Any advice, comments or opinions are greatly appreciated. |

Brandon: Not sure if you've been receiving the messages I've been sending. I sent the first one about 15 minutes after your first post and had the right folks lined up to sort this out within the hour last weekend. There, I think from reading this, is a great deal of inaccurate information. If you have any problems, just drop me a note. Keep us posted. Court |

Thanks Court,Dave, Court,I didn't get any of the messages you've left. This has all been a real pain in the a$$. I've been without my bike for more than a month. All the information they've had, and have been giving to me has been inaccurate. I was told that the 07 models are more standardized, and this is what I want. I don't think I'm out of line for wanting a new bike, I don't want this to be a continuing problem. I made a formal complaint with the customer service department, and I've been told they are talking to their legal department about how they are going to make this all right. I'm really irritated at this point. The other issue I've had, is that the dealership always has to order parts for buells, and they don't keep any in stock. Am I wrong for wanting some sort of compensation? |

Yes, if by that you mean Buell should hand you a new 07 for your used 06. I do think you are entitled to getting your bike fixed. For no additional cost to you, as long as you have already paid for the initial work. Are you saying the dealer doesn't keep parts in stock or that Buell doesn't? Dealers that do not stock parts is very common. For Buell to not have a part is pretty rare. I have many questions about this issue. Is it really the wrong fork or is that what the dealer told you? Is it both forks or just one? If it has the wrong forks on it, does it also have the wrong lower triple tree? How are the 07 models more "standardized" than the 06 models? Who told you that? I am no longer in the Buell biz but i do not remember anything when the 07s came out(almost a year ago) that led me to think they are using any different forks or fork parts. Could someone enlighten or remind me what changed? You have the guy (Court) that can get to the bottom of this! I will stay tuned for the results. Dave |

Dave: I started sending e-mails to Brandon immediately after his first post. I've never heard a peep from Brandon. I've learned to never say never, but something here sounds really unusual. Finding out EXACTLY what forks went on that bike, what time of day, who put them on, what the torque was and the number of degrees each fastener rotated during installation is no problem. If there WAS a problem it'd fall in the "under 24 hours" to resolve category . . the time and multiple highly irregular facts make me suspicious. I suspect a dealer problem. |

I agree. BTW, where is Brandon? 5 days and no posts in his own thread? Hmmmmmm? |

Bandon? You out there? I've not heard a word in response to any of my messages. I feel bad about waking the QA/QC guy up 2 weeks ago Sunday morning. I'm betting it all worked out. Court |

Sorry guys, I haven't been able to get back to the net. The dealer has basically given me this story now. Frontier Harley Davidson, in Lincoln, Nebraska is telling me that, when they clicked on the part on their computer, it didn't scroll down all the way, and so they ended up ordering the wrong part. When that part didn't fit, they called some big wig tech guy, and he said the part that they ordered should fit. It still didn't fit. (My opinion is that the harley tech guy should have caught that it was the wrong part) Then the tech tells frontier that they should just take a front end off an '07 XB12Ss and to put it on the 06 model, and says that 07 and 06 are interchangeable. The 07 fork didn't fit, so they assumed something else was wrong. Come to find out, the 06 and 07 front ends don't match. Alot of this got messed up, A) when the wrong part was ordered, and B) when the tech started giving frontier all the wrong info. Anyhow, they ended up ordering the right part, said sorry, and have a nice day. F'rs! |

Brandon: I think you are in for a tough experience. Let me tell you why. I love helping Buell owners resolve problems and have learned a few things over the years. The story above sounds pretty unbelievable, but one of the things I have learned, even when the words "impossible" are on my lips, it to never say never. I seen everything up to and including the word "BUELL" misspelled on the tank. The problem here is that there is not one single "actionable" fact in anything you have provided here thus far. I hope your dealer has better information than we do. When you first posted, I called the person at Buell who could resolve this problem within hours and, on the weekend, folks were on standby to sort this out on Monday. No one heard anything. Read, carefully please, what you have typed giving attention to terms like: clicked on the part - what part? I want the number they clicked on. Was the number wrong, did they click wrong or did Buell get an order for one number and ship another. it didn't scroll down all the way, and so they ended up ordering the wrong part. - what part? I want the number they clicked on. Was the number wrong, did they click wrong or did Buell get an order for one number and ship another. When that part didn't fit, what part? I want the number they clicked on. Was the number wrong, did they click wrong or did Buell get an order for one number and ship another. If I had your VIN and the part they tried to install this question would take less than 60 seconds to end once and for all. they called some big wig tech guy, - there are no big wigs at Buell. In addition, among the 9,000,000,000 of us living on this planet, each and everyone of us has a name. If they called "Bob Smith" that gives someone a starting point to a solution. Try calling HD and asking to speak to "big wig" and he said the part that they ordered should fit. what part? Then the tech tells frontier that they should just take a front end off an '07 XB12Ss and to put it on the 06 model, and says that 07 and 06 are interchangeable. - That sounds highly unlikely. Again without a name of a person to talk to or the part numbers they gave you, it's nothing but water cooler chatter. Anyway . . you get my drift. If you really do have a problem (and again I am not doubting you, I just really can't tell) you'll need facts. When you call Buell Customer Service you'll need: Your name and contact info. Ditto for the dealer VIN Part number that was ordered, order number Part number that was received, etc. Once you get this stuff, I'm betting you'll have the entire thing resolved quickly. Court |
