Trying to get a set of S/E .551 "E" cams installed in my S2 and having some issues. I may very well be over-thinking it, but here goes:

I have already installed the new pinion gear so the tooth pitch is right.

Looking at the install pic in the instructions, there are three dots and three arrows on the #2 cam. It says use the dots to line up with #1, pinion, and #3. No problem there, but the timing hashmark on the end of the cam (that positions the timing rotor) is about 150 degrees off of what the picture shows. And different than the location for the original #2 cam when correctly installed.

The #3 cam has a dot and a dash. The photo shows the dot at 4 o'clock, lining up with the #4; the dash at 8 o'clock lining up with #2. Problem is when you line up the dot with #4, the dash is waay up at 11 o'clock. (I tried it with the marks "backwards" but at the same 4 and 8 orientation and that jams a valve).

Lastly, if you lay all the cams (stock and E) on a bench as if they were installed, timed up per the photos...the lobes are in seriously different locations. Like nearly 90 degrees in some cases. Is there that big a difference or do I have a wrong set of cams?

<sigh>

Did you make sure you had #1 at TDC and not on ex stroke as piston will be up on both strokes? Look here at S-1 manual
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/Manuals/S1_1 996-1997_Service/BU3c.pdf

I have done mine numerous times and after fiddling it always comes out as the pics,I use Redshift cams.

I used the S2 manual and timed everything based on the pinion gear, which has a notch that is supposed to line up with a dot on #2. The pinion gear only goes on the crank one way (keyed shaft) and the timing notch aligns with the keyway...but when the cams are timed, the engine is not at TDC on either cylinder. The manual actually says nothing about putting either cylinder at TDC, it refers only to the notch on the pinion gear (that's both my 95 S2 manual and my 98 S1W manual). My main concern is the #3 cam doesn't have marks where the picture says they should be, and the timing cup is waaay off compared to the photos.

The install manual I'm using is for kit 25197-04 which shows use for 04-later XL motors, but talking with the guys in the machine shop (who may be incorrect) the only difference is the change to "full contact" tooth pitch which I took care of with the pinion gear change.

Oddness...

Well, upon further inspection and analysis...I was given bad information. There is indeed an "E" cam kit for XL motors that has the same lift/duration/etc grind as the XB cams. It is NOT, however, the same set of cams that are in an XB, timed with a different set of marks.

Counting in XL fashion, the timing rotor is on cam 2 in the S2 and XL motors; on an XB it's in cam position #3. Everything is wrong. Actually, it looked like the rear exhaust cam was pretty close...<grumble>

So...I guess I have one pinion gear for sale, never run, for XB style "full contact" gearset. I'm just putting in stock Thunderstorm / Lightning upgrade cams with the 15 grind. I had options for either an N8 or N6 set..but I think they're a bit radical for a daily bike that's going to see high miles. I may toss some N8s in the S1W at some point later...but for now, factory stuff in the S2.

They're stamped 15-1 thru 15-4; from what the parts lookup tells me they're the same cams as the 25648-91 "Lightning" component cams accessory kit, and the stock cams in my S1W.

the X1 cams are identified with those number sequences.

X1 cams are P# 25195-00ya
and would / should work in an S2 motor, with the pinion change. They are said to be similar to or the same as one of the milder Andrews grinds not sure which one
