I had a loud clattering noise coming from the primary, so after a little discussion decided to tighten the primary drive chain. After inspecting it I found it needed adjusting. After I adjusted it, the clattering noise went away but now I have a whirring sound. It sounds like a gear drive on a blower if you know what that sounds like. Did I tighten it too much maybe? |

Sounds like its to tight....... I think it should flex 3/8" to 5/8" in the tightest spot |

Yes, it is indeed now too tight. Loosen it up a hair or two. The specs posted above look right. |

Anyone ever adjust a primary with the engine running? I know it's not what's in the manual, but it would eliminate 'huntin' for the tight spot. Just curious. |

Just curious."QUOTE" Don't see how you could do that. One it would puke oil all over the place, just turning the motor over without starting it causes oil to puke from the inspection cover and you would have no way to measure play in the chain while it was moving |

Yeah, don't adjust it to the right sound, use the free play specs. Looser is better than tighter, so you don't destroy any bearings. |

Posted above are the correct factory specs. I had a "whirring" sound when adjusted to spec, so I loosened it up a little and all is good. I'd suggest somewhere in the neighborhood of 5/8-3/4. |

Tank - thanks for the tip. I kinda figured that was the deal. I thought I got it to correct factory spec according to my little repair book. Good to hear I'm not the only one. I was beginning to think I was crazy. |

Do NOT ride it while too tight. |

I think 3/4 is kind of the unwritten/ BadWeb corrected spec on the primary. As far as my question...I personally would never do such a thing, but I thought I had seen a post of someone doing in the KV, was just curios HOW that was possible. I adjust mine by the manual and it takes all of 10 min., no need to fool with what works...K.I.S.S. right? |

M1 - I wouldn't call it too tight. It is tightened to the factory spec. But, it's not like I was planning on riding it far right away. |

Keep in mind....Factory specs from Buell are not always the "Correct" specs |
