Hey! I know oil leaks are going to happen! Has anyone had a leak from the front cylinder between the cylinder head and the lower rocker cover? Is this common or am I just lucky?

Welcome to Buelling this is a "rite of passage" you have a rocker box leak the paper gaskets installed when the engine is built fail early on, 50~75 $ for a gasket kit, get an FSM and some tools if the failed part is the steel (new up grade part ) look closer.
Post here with questions..

Jaded,
I just did this- it is not too difficult. My only suggestions are:
1. Take digital pics before and during assembly. You'll know where all of the parts go later.
2. Drop the motor using a jack- support the wheels with wheel stands.
3. Take your time and enjoy!

Lowering the engine a couple inches lets you take one of the bends out of your wrist while you're doing the front. Not required if you have a *short* allen wrench for that left front bolt..but gives you a bit more room to maneuver. If you do pull the front mount, remove it from the frame, not the head. The frame-to-mount bolt is 100 ft-lbs on reinstall.

Also, while you're in there, you can upgrade to either the 1pc Sportster or 1pc XB rocker boxes - it eliminates one layer of gaskets. Sportster keeps the side-puke breathers; XB requires a rework to PCV and new breather hoses but it's a good upgrade.

You'll have to cut down an Allen wrench to get at some of the fasteners on the rocker covers... or you can drop the engine. Your choice!

I'd also recommend covering the 'well' (the area the oil lines and wiring route down through) with a rag... I dropped my cut down Allen wrench in there and had to buy one of those magnets on a telescoping rod to get it out.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the help! Ordered the gaskets removed the rocker covers. I was able to slide them out without lowering the motor. A little tight but OK. Hopefully I'll get the parts and be back on the road before this weekend!
