It happened at the worst possible time. I was getting on the freeway in heavy 70+ mph traffic. At the end of the on-ramp, I swung wide around a line of slow moving cages and gassed it only to have it sputter and die after a short burst of acceleration. The CEL came on intermittently and there was some backfiring. I pulled over to the shoulder and was still coasting when it started running again. Everything started to seem fine until I accelerated past about 3600 rpm when the CEL flashed once or twice and the popping and stalling happened again. I limped most of the way home keeping the rpms below 3k as best I could. It finally died for good on the side of the road about 5 miles from home. When it died, I noticed that the fan was cycling on and off rapidly with the CEL in sync until I turned off the key. The fan cycled even after I turned off the key until it finally quit after a few minutes. Oh, and I had tried cycling the ECOS a couple of times. Now, when I turn the key on, the exhaust servo cycles on and off rapidly along with the fuel pump and the CEL flashes in sync with them. And, it turns over, but will not start.

Its going to the dealer for warranty work. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Bad ground would be my guess. I've had it happen where the grounding screw came loose, lights came on and off, functions worked and didn't. Tightened up a grounding screw, all was well.

If it isn't that, look for some nicked wires somewhere in the loom.

If you have a different ECM and can zero the TPS to that bike, it is a good test to swap it in to see if the problem follows the ECM.

What are "CEL" and "ECOS"?

Thanks, Al. Good guesses for sure. I just had the 15k service done on it less than 50 miles ago. I (unfortunately) bought the prepaid maintenance and have yet to have dealership service without some sort of problem. Till now, it was mostly minor oversight or just shoddy workmanship (all of which the dealer corrected without hesitation).

I didn't have a chance to look at it last night, but will go into it tonight after work to look for the obvious. Whatever the problem is, it is not intermittent. The servo, CEL, and fuel pump all operate in sync at a frequency of about 2 cycles per second as soon as you turn the key. It's almost exactly as if you were turning on and off the ignition about twice per second.

CEL = Check Engine Light
ECOS = Engine Cut-off Switch

Thanks for fixing my anxious and frustrated, poorly written thread title, Blake.

Turned out to be a pinched wire that the dealer graciously fixed under the factory warranty. This, despite the dealership having caused the pinched wire in the first place. Nice racket. Manufacturing your own warranty claims sounds like a lucrative business to be in.
