I read today, in one on-line magazine that a new water cooled Buell will soon be presented at Laguna Seca. It will have a 45 degrees, V2, water cooled, 1200cc motor, built together with Rotax. Is this true? All our dreams & prayers coming true ? |

There have been various rumours on Raptors & Rockets and a couple of French and Spanish web sites, including some very dodgy looking photoshop collages of XBRR/XB hybrids with what looked like Honda Hornet exhausts!. They are all taking stabs in the dark as far as I can tell, with both 45 degree and 60 degree formations being touted. Rotax seems to be a common thread though. I think the best bet is to see what happens in July ;) |

I can't see a 45 degree? Now a 60 degree, now we're talking! That would be sweet |

Well, there's one thing for sure. It's not a snake . . . if it were, it'd bit ya. Don't say the good folks at Buell didn't do their part to spill the beans. Exciting times. |

The wider the V the more room there is for throttle bodies and straighter inlets, at the expense of taking more room. This means that the 60 degree format is a good compromise in terms of packaging & performance between the narrow angle 45 (unless of course they reverse the heads like on the old XR1000, which I can't see them doing) and the Ducati like 90 degree motor. There are other issues such as firing intervals & vibration, but this can be solved by balancers etc so are no longer the primary reason for choosing a specific V angle. |

I would like to see a 45 degrees engine, since : 1. It would be a trademark for Buell's engine ,since no-one else is using it. 2. It would help maintain the shortest possible wheelbase, which is another trademark for Buell ,and gives a handling advantage. But I would not be disapointed with any other degree value for the engine. |

The problem with counterbalancers is that it does take power away from the rear wheel. There ain't no free lunch, as they say. You need energy to spin a counter balancer, energy that would normally go towards driving the rear wheel is instead diverted to drive the counterbalancers. If you've ever checked the dyno charts for the Dynas vs. the Softails, you'd see that the Softails put slightly less hp to the rear wheel in order to spin their big, honkin' counterbalancers. On the other hand, excessive vibration leads to premature metal fatigue and parts failures. Decisions, decisions... |

45 degree just won't do the revs they are going to need. I think 60 is a good compromise |
