Hi all I am new to this forum and have a couple of questions. 1. I have ordered the pro series intake for my bike but cannot afford the exhaust at this point. Can I run the intake and step up 1 jet size with stock exhaust? 2. Can the stock exhaust be modded to be free flowing? I have access to a fully equipped shop for cutting and welding any info will help. Cheers |

Go check out the Drummer website that is listed somewhere on this site. They are taking stock exhausts for the other Buells and cutting them, doing something to the insides and rewelding it. The Blast exhaust shape, externally, except for the front part is a great shape that you lose when you go to aftermarket. I have a friend that can do anything with metal, he chopped the exhaust for the Sporty, and it came out fine, I am going to have him look at the Little Kids Blast now. |

The Drummer boys cut open a blast exhaust and decided that it is not worth their while. I think that for the ammount of work required, it would cost near what a full aftermarket system. The muffler is a true tri pass muffler. I'm sure that if you cut the whole top off of it, you could gut it and make a more straight through design with some muffling. James |

Kevin and Brian cut mine open along time ago. We were looking at using it for the engine that I got from Aaron Wilson. We found it was going to be a waste of time doing anything with it. |

I bought one that was modified, it does make it louder. The fellow before me did the modification, but decided he didn't like it. If you are looking at the rear of the muffler, he cut right side the inside edge of the exit pipe and bent it over to the left ( toward the outside of the muffle) allowing the exhaust to exit without going through the baffles. It may have had some small effect on performance but I didn't notice much difference, but it was really loud, too loud for me. I bent the pipe back to where it was about 3/8 inch from closing the gap to allow most of the exhaust to come out of the exit pipe but allow some to exit the internal baffling. With the pipe completely bent over, it sounded good at idle, but far too loud going through any area with buildings etc that would echo back the sound. After bending it back to tune it down some I got it that it is pretty quiet while idle but cracks when you hit the throttle. I road tested it at about 55 mph and it is just quiet enough that it doesn't make my helmet rattle, if I bend the pipe over any further, my helmet rattles and it is annoying. If all you want was something a little louder, the mod described will work. The problem with the Blast is it's too quiet at low rpms but gets too loud at higher rpms. It's much quieter than my Harley at idle and low rpms, but once the Blast gets going it's actually louder, and it's not the deep mellow sound I like. I am looking at going with an aftermarket exhaust, just haven't decided yet - I am especially interested in the Jardine because they sell an insert that cuts down the sound but is easily milled open to dial in the amount of noise/performace you desire. |

OK, I'm getting ready to cut the stock one open on the Little Kids bike, what am I going to find in there? Hopefully not a Honda lawnmower engine! |

Three preforated tubes and some packing. thats about all your going to find in the thing, Swampy. I have already opened mine and removed some of the packing and cut off some of the final pipe( the last pipe that the exhaust flows through before it exits). Didn't do much maybe, maybe added a little more throat to the exhaust note but that was about it. The reason that I even bothered to open it was that the downpipe to the muffler broke on me (what better time to play w/ the muffler than when you need to remove it to fix something.) |

From what direction did you attack the thing from? Back? Front? Top? Thanks |

What if you removed all the guts, and then put baffles in it like a reverse flow car muffler? Could you construct some internals similar to a Flowmaster muffler? Nick |

Chances are it would be louder and thats about it. Without putting any real science into it you'll be lucky to get any improvement in performance. |

Swampy , Personally I attacked mine from the rear; but then I only removed PART of the final tube that the exhaust flows through. I also had to make an access panel ( please read hole, lol) toward the front top; now it doesn't look pretty but the melted coat hanger is still keeping the gasses going where they should.(hey someone took the wirefeed, not like I'm any better w/ one of those lol) |

Has anyone tried putting a bigger diameter header pipe on the stock exhaust? I like the quiet, but wondered it it would help to have more volume in the pipe. Sort of like the power bomb on FMF dirt bike headers. Thanks Paul |

Hey Buellistic, Thanks for the reminder, I looked it up in the archives. Still not sure if opening the second side is for me yet, but the fatter header sure seems right. For some reason I am very pro quiet on motorcycles. By the way, thanks for the spacer link a while back. I ended up using a 1/2" long steel standoff with 3/8"ID and 5/8" OD with the 1.5" 5/16-18 grade 8's. All from www.mcmaster.com. Had to ditch the frisbee thing and used the stock washers on the outside of the pulley. It has held up so far. |

Luckyduck: If you do not open the right side you are wasting you time and money with the larger header pipe ... By the way the db level(hole on right side)is no where near the after market exhaust systems ... In BUELLing LaFayette |

So, when I drill this hole on the right side. It should just go through the skin of the muffler and not be like jamming a big drill bit in there? I like the idea of keeping the quiet, but upping the flow. By the way, I stopped by the local Harley dealer to get a spare boot today, as mine is giving me issues. They couldn't believe someone can do 300 mile days on the Blast. They now have Maggie Mae's web page Paul |

Luckyduck: "i" put a XB12 motor(engine) sprocket and primary chain on my BLAST so it can be riden on the Interstate at 70/80 MPH as long as you want to ... Went to Home Depot and got a metal hole cutter(1 3/4 inch) ... Be sure to put a wet piece of paper towel inside the hole cutter keep it cool and keep it from getting dull because of heat ... |

Just for the record, a stock Blast will do 75-80mph all day. A change in gearing is not necessary to accomplish this. |

Since we ride a lot of 2 up with junk in the top case on hilly streets, I want to keep my low first gear. Our record so far is me at 190lb, Paula at 140lb, 2 gallons of white box wine, a case of beer and 5 sodas going to a picnic. That made the saddle bags and top case full. What I am looking for is the ability to run at 70-75mph with the Buell windshield into a 25-30mph head wind for 250 miles in an afternoon to slip over to my parents. It would be nice to not have to keep the throttle at the WFO stop every time the road tips a bit up hill. The route is in my little report in the ride review section. Paul |

Paul, 2-up, thats going to difficult. Exhaust, cams and intake will help. Bolt in B50 cams may still be on sale for $75! |

I sort of treat my bike like I did my car when I had one. If it will fit on there some how it is good to go. Everyone should know what hitting bottom on the suspension feels like Stock, it has plenty of power for around town work with both of us. It just is really poky above 60 or so. I'll let you all know how it feels with the Buellistic exhaust as soon as I find someone to do the work. Paul |

Kenny, Did you hack a stock exhaust, or did you buy a different one and incase it with the shell of the stock one? |

I used a horizontal band-saw to cut the stock exhaust into 4 pieces at each of the stock end plates, discarded the last 4" and fabbed 2 new end plates bored holes in them and made a perforated core. I mig welded the first end plate just behind the first seam and installed the core and tig welded the segments back together. I wrapped the core in stainless steel wool and packed the rest of the shell with fiberglass packing and tig welded the rear end plate on. The tip was robbed off of an old V&H can that I had laying around.....Kenny |
