I have a Hals Competition Chain swing arm conversion on my XB 12SR, and I just HATE the Nissin rear brake caliper. I have purchased a couple of Brembo rear brake calipers off Ducati's and am going to install one that fits under the swingarm to save unsprung weight, and improve braking. In addition, it will visually really clean up the rear end as the Nissin unit is big, heavy, ugly and cheap looking. Has anyone done this kind of conversion on their XB RR? Thanks Steve Anderson for the PM. Steve suggested the Buell quick detachable brake system that he developed for McWilliams, and which uses a Hayes caliper. I will investigate that. Today, I was out with the lads on the Sunday morning sport ride, I a noticed that the rear brake caliper holder on the Ducati 749, which holds the caliper above the swing arm on the right side of the bike, looks like it might work just fine on the left side, holding the caliper under the swing arm where I would prefer to have it for aesthetic reasons. Went to eBay, and bought the part for $45. As I already have a 749 caliper that I bought for this project, I will try to make these parts fit on my Hals swing arm with the help of Andy, the machinist/magician. Hello Anthony, I am not doing this to add more brake power to the rear. The main idea is to clean up the look of the bike. Reducing unsprung weight won't do any harm either. Need some rear brake as this is a street/show bike that needs to pass inspection. | ||

I am doing that right now Jon, Getting a price to Have a bracket made, should know by early this week. They have the cad dwg. and will price one from 6061 & Stainless. It is also the Brembo brake caliper off the ducati. And will need a longer brake line of about 4". Also doing for looks to hide the caliper...Pretty easy upgrade in my opinion.. Damn great minds think alike.... | ||

Here is what my plan is. Keep in mind that I have a Hal's chain conversion swing arm, which is a little different than the XBRR swing arm. 1. Take the mounting plate off a Ducati 748, which mounts on the right side of the wheel, and put it, upside down on the left side. Here is a Photoshop mock up:  The slider bolt will keep the brake plate from rotating. 2. There will be need to a spacer to fit the Ducati plate on the Buell axle. Here is my preliminary design.  3. I will probably also need a new brake line. Not sure how long, or how to get one yet. I am hoping to get it done this week, if I can get Andy my machinist/magician to focus on it. | ||

"The slider bolt will keep the brake plate from rotating." Serendipity... cool. Make sure the caliper has enough ground clearance if (Heaven forbid) you should lowside and can't throw your body underneath Lil' Blackie fast enough. | ||

You might have a problem with the bleeder being on the bottom. | ||

Justin - what do you think the problem might be with the bleeder on the bottom Ducati's do it all the time. This project is turning out to be rather difficult, and pretty low on the effort/ money / reward scale. Starting to look like winter work. Here is the latest prelim photo.  Using the slider bolt isn't going to work: unsupported length is too long. Need to put a bolt through the swing arm. Need to design, and get a new brake line. Does clean up the swing arm visually though, doesn't it? | ||

Air will go to the highest point in the caliper which is normally the point where the bleed screw is. | ||

Seems like a lot of time and money to spend on something your bike does't need. Like all the carbon fiber on mine. I might buy the under-swingarm brake if it was a kit. It does look better than stock. | ||

Are you sure all of it? I would think there would still be little bubbles in the caliper. | ||
