I just bought a "new" 2000 X1. Been at the dealer the whole time. I am a little concerned as it has been sitting for 7 years, but the price was too good (7K) to pass up, plus I have full warranty. What kinds of problems should I look for? I have heard valve springs could be shot from being in one position? I have also noticed corrosion on some hardware. Anything you guys can think of? Thanx

First, while looking over the dealers shoulder, have him run a check for recalls w/your VIN. If any, those need to be addressed.
I wouldn't worry about the valve springs; they seem to do pretty well. I would pay attention to the various seals and gaskets. Calendar age and lack of use can make them unhappy.

Things that will need fixing - if not done already:
Shock should be replaced with the latest Showa or at least the SRP kit (clamps around the front and rear mounts to prevent collapse in the event of failure).
Depending on when it was built it might need a rear pot temp sensor fitted and an ECM upgrade.
Other things that you might want to upgrade would be the muffler front mount (to '01 spec); the primary tensioner (to the later beefier item); Detent plate; gear shift mechanism (to '01 spec); rear isolators (to later spec - you'll be lucky if the originals make it to the 10k service). I'm sure others will chime in with anything I've forgotten.

Don't let the list put you off - make sure the first two are done and maybe the primary tensioner then get the rest done over the next couple of services.

Dealer has ordered the latest Showa and also the exhaust/hangar upgrade. I already purchased the chain tensioner/Bosch O2 sensor/ shifter upgrade and race ECM. Along w/ Supertrapp, Pro Series plugs and wires, Forcewinder XR2. It goes in for 500 mile service and the aforementioned items next week. Only issue so far has been puking and RPM surge at idle? Jumps 300-500 increments, only after bike has run for awhile. Dealer says surge may be ECM, which I am changing. I'm think it may be head temp sensor.

I would guess head temp sensor rather than ecm. 7 k is what they had in the bike. Id make them discount allot of things for you since you took the huge chance of buying a bike that sit for 7 years.

I would have been concerned about the rings and bearings / tires.

surging may be an air leak as well.

I had the ECM replaced under warranty
that fixed, it then the temp sensor died.

Oldog, what would the symptoms be if the rings and/or bearings were bad? As for tires, they do seem kinda hard, but hold air fine and seem to handle ok. Then again I really haven't ridden it too hard as I just finished break-in.

Check the intake seals and the throttle body seal.

My initial concern would be those 7 year old tyres and valve stems. The rest will require time to show them selves.

My 2000 M2 had paper rockerbox gaskets, they went out at about 3500 miles. The dealership actually did them under warranty.

Yours will go out, probably sooner than later. Mine have been great since I put metal ones in myself, the dealership replaced the bad with paper that went out again around 11K miles.

Seven year old rubber would warrant caution until you figure out if the tires need replacing. Try a different brand tire when you replace them, I was surprised how newer design tires handle so much better than stock.

Thanks to all for the info. I love the bike and regret wasting my time on two Harleys before I came to my senses. I will monitor things closely and see what happens.
