Hey everyone. I have a 98 s1 with vance and hines, andrews cams, and an s&s super e carb. My problem is, anytime i ride below 3k rpm, it pops somewhat through the carb every so often, and occasionally a backfire. Do i need to adjust the mixture screws, or get the low speed circuit rejetted? Thanks! |

Has it always done this or is it a fairly recent phenomenom? If it is recent, the problem may be due to intake manifold seals drying out and leaking air. An intake air leak, however minor, will surely result in what you are experiencing. If it has always done this though, that would indicate that the carb setup is not quite dialed in and could benefit from slightly richening up the idle circuit. If it still pops & farts after adjusting the idle mixture, then the low speed circuit could probably be rejetted slightly richer. |

I adjusted the idle circuit mixture until it seemed to be running a hundred percent better at idle. I did it according to the S&S service manual. I picked the median position between too lean and too rich by adjusting it until it almost dies either way, and then going to halfway between. My bike immediately started to idle a LOT better, so much so i had to turn the idle down. It runs great now, i ran a tank of 93 through it and its great. Thanks everyone~! |

Usually 1 1/2 turns CCW after it bottoms out is the preferred method as you stated. Also, watch your plugs as you can further tweak your mixture..it's a good carb to dial into..been running the Super E on my XLH1200 since '91. |
