A friend of mine had his $500 Shoei stolen today. Put it on his mirror, went into a convenience store for 2-3 minutes and whammy. Got me thinking about a real helmet lock for my Firebolt. I've never used the OE 'security' cable for fear of scratching the body. I usually just hang it on the foot peg. Thieves suck. |

Someone back in 2003 or 2004...forgot, you will have to do a search for it sorry...anyways..they used a small piece of metal made a hook, and drilled it into the side of the frame under the passangers seat.(AKA..like the bracket on a TL1000S) Someone also put a clip on the passanger seat after removing the strap. So you put you helmet on the clip than put the seat on and its done...or you put your helmet on the metal piece/bracket and your done. I started complaining about this in 2003 about no helmet lock on the Firebolt, among other things that was needed.....after all my suggestions to Buell we got the cable wire...so I guess Buell listens sometimes even if its the wrong idea..lol Kind of weird that the Blast and the older X-1 models had a helmet lock but when they made the new Firebolt, it was over looked. I guess engineers dont ride the bikes they build...anyways...hope that helps... |

I used a Uly helmet lock re keyed to match my firebolts ignition. Someone else did this on here, so I can't take the credit for this idea.

If it's a locale where riders are expected and frequent, there are always more eyes on my stuff than anywhere else. I usually leave it on the ground next to my bike (on a small cloth if I have one). If not, the helmet's on the end of my arm. Anywhere you leave it strapped to the bike or otherwise is going to deteriorate the helmet or leave it subject to damage. One fellow Badwebber happened to leave his helmet on the footpeg just after fueling. Or should I say OVER fueling. I noticed him weaving. It must have been the fumes from the 3 cups of gas rolling around his lid. Leaving it on the seat allows for someone to bump it and allow it to hit the ground. Leaving it on the mirrors or handlebars allows the padding to compress in weird places making the fit deteriorate over time as well as potentially weakening the compression points from the inside of the helmet. Locking the helmet to the bike places the helmet close to hot exhaust parts, hot engine parts, and hot frame parts. Heat deteriorates the internal compression material as well as padding of the helmet. Leaving the helmet with the bike allows the helmet to be subject to UV light breaking down the shell and interior of the helmet. If you absolutely, positively can't take it with you, locking it on the bike is better than getting it stolen, but shouldn't be an all the time practice. |

I use a small Master lock and put it through one of the holes of the foot protector of the rear footpeg. The helmet D-ring is then attached to the lock. Gloves I usually leave in the helmet figuring they're okay if the helmet is okay. So far, so good.... |

Good ideas guys. I like the Uly lock as it can be keyed to the rest of the locks, but the small master lock is a good idea until I can order the Uly lock. I looked at the HD lock, but have removed my pass. pegs/brackets which limits mtg. locations. Ftbstd, Good points about UV exposure and deterioration of padding. I try not to leave it on the bike, but sometimes circumstances don't permit me to carry it. Some of the jobs we work require physical searches and we're only allowed to carry tools/lunchboxes in and out of secure bldgs. Buelltroll, Nice simple solution. Percyco, I don't know if those brackets/heelgaurds are chrome or polished, but they look very nice. |

Does anyone know how the small Helmet Lock Cable supplied in the tool kit is supposed to be used on the XB lightnings? |

Here is a simple homemade solution to adding a helmet lock to your Buell. I am posting this picture for mesa_cityx, who can give details if anyone wants them.

Ridrx, N1027.1AK Part# for the helmet lock It was $57.50 and took a week to get. It cost $12 at the local locksmith to re key. Someone at the dealer told me that I could order one already keyed to match by using my vin#, but that it would take at least a month to get. |

I don't ride my bike where I feel it will be unsafe and I always take my helmet with me. Usually, it's not a big deal. There are definitely some ingenius solutions to the helmet lock problem on here, though. |

i use a 3-4' long piece of vinyl coated cable (1/8") with crimped "loops" on each end(coils up & fits nicely under the seat) pass loop thru one of your "d" rings do the loop'd loop and put the free loop around your seat latch & lock your seat(if your cable is long enough you can lock jackets etc.)no extra keys , or extra brackets needed!. WNTL ? |

Ridrx, You might try taking a helmet sock (like the one that comes with the helmet) and putting that on the helmet if it's going to be in the sun long. At least it will keep it from direct exposure. Sunlight and heat will damage your helmet quicker than just about anything. |

If you're not worried about someone cutting the helmet straps or D-rings, just slide the D-rings on the helmet over the clutch or brake lever. Then, take a small padlock (I use the multi-wheel combination kind) and lock it on the lever between the D-ring and the ball on the lever. Works good for 2 helmets if you're careful. The lock is small enough that it can't slide over the end of the lever and the helmet can't slide off while the lock is in place. Of course someone could cut the straps or break the lever off if you've got a really nice lid. (Message edited by dgunther on June 18, 2007) (Message edited by blake on June 18, 2007) |

DGunther, I edited your post above trying to figure out how a bunch of character codes appeared there. Still not sure, but I got it to display properly. |

I use what is similar to Dgunther, except I use a cable gun lock. Looks kind of like the bicycle lock with a lock and a eight inch loop. Or I carry my helmet and use it for a shopping basket. |

"Or I carry my helmet and use it for a shopping basket." I can get 2 cans of Ravioli (small) in mine. Picking up cold cans or bottles aren't suggested for this manuever. |

I can certainly verify that if you fill your gas tank on a cool morning and the sun comes up, and you decided to use that poorly located Uly helmet lock, the bike can indeed fill your helmet with premium gas. It is nearly impossible to get a helmet strap to reach it anyhow, especially with the hard bags on. |

I can certainly verify that gas has never fallen up into my helmet. |
