Completed a bbg last Thursday on my Uly. I started on Long Island in New York, took I78 to 81, stopped in Carlisle Pa. Salem Virginia was my next stop, then on to Knoxville and back. My setup included a Garmin quest, sirius radio, hella ff50's mounted under the signal stalks, and a 5 gal tourtank. (Thanks BienHoaBob for the help so many months ago!)I used a airrider gel pad for a bit on the stock seat. My stops were slow, due to my inexperience, and I hit some traffic outside of Carlisle on the way back, but it worked out well. I didnt think I would make it in the 24 hours, but 23 hours 44 minutes, 1531 miles later, I got my ending receipt. An Officer at my local precinct, signed my witness form, and it was off to sleep. Bike is an 06, and all stock except for the things I mentioned.
These pics were taken today as I was away with my family, and haven't even really unpacked yet. The bike ran great, and I averaged 43 mpg on the trip. |

Is the BBG the same as the IronButt Association? Maybe the BBG is East coast, and the IBA is the West coast version. Do explain if you know the difference, please. |

Congratulations! That's one though ride. Attempted it once but it turned into a Bun Burner due to weather. |

I went with the 4.5 gal Tour Tank. I only run 4 gal. at a time. The only time I notice it is when I am pushing the bike around before I get on it. Once I'm moving I hardly notice it. |

Where did you get the tank and what windscreen is that? I've done the CC and Master tour on my GS. The Master Tour was the most fun. I've been debating on trying a west coast trip on the Uly this year or maybe a Great Lakes Tour. Congrats on your BBG. |

Thanks all....Mike, a BBG is just what Hughlysses said, check out the IBA website, there's all kinds of cool rides, tips etc (I enjoy reading the ride reports). Slipknot, as much as I ENJOY(!) beer, it's only filled with hi-test Wolffone, like Wolfridgerider said, in mine I get 4.5 gals, it's baffled inside, at slow speed you feel it a bit, but on the highway, don't notice at all. Flynuly, it was very close, any more delays and it was going past the 24 hours. The hose coming out of the bag on the back was from a 70 oz. camelback. Wolfridgerider, we have similar setups, where is your route taking you? Are you doing 750 out and back or 1500 straight through? |

Make sure you check the various states DOT's for construction. The only problems with 70 is KC, I hate the traffic in KC. Good luck with your ride and have fun. |

What time of day did you leave? All the events seem to leave in the early morning. That seems like the opposite of what I would do. I figure I'll be wide awake the first half, and getting tired the second half. So I would perfer to be wide awake while riding in the dark. Then the sun will be beating on me the second half helping me stay awake/alert. I wouldn't want to be getting tired, and riding for hours on end in the dark. |

Mike, Congratulations on the BBG. That is one tough ride. I've only attempted it once. I did 1,410 miles in 22 hours when a roller cam bearing went out in my '99 Road Glide. ( 3:30 Sunday morning in Minnesota), but that's a another story. I'm doing an in-state Wisconsin Saddle Sore 1000 tomorrow. 90% of the ride is non-interstate. I'm looking forward to a nice ride. Blake, two things were most challenging...first was I have two bad knees, and one became a little uncomfortable after 3 hours or more without stretching it out. The other thing is just keeping on a schedule. I took index cards and wrote down the address of each stop, how many miles between stops, how much time it should take me etc. As I arrived at each stop, I had a quick way to tell if I was on schedule, and then flip to the next card. It's very important as without some type of schedule, it's hard to make the 1500 miles. Mikef, I guess everybody is different, I work 4pm to 12am and am usually up at least to 2 am, but sometimes later. For me, I tried to leave at midnight, but by the time I loaded the bike, packed lunch, showered, dressed, got my witness form signed it was after 2 am when I got my starting receipt. I figured after the sun went down, and I was well into the ride, I didn't have too much further to go. It all depends on your sleeping habits I guess. Also, if you get that tired, just pull over and sleep somewhere safe. Bob, I remember you told me that before, I couldn't imagine getting that close and having that happen! I would've been miserable! Your in state sounds like fun and I hope you enjoy the ride. Captain, thanks, the tank gives me a range well over 300 miles, some of which is beyond my ability to sit that long! Dyna, good luck on your SS1000 have fun and enjoy the ride. Wolfridge, good luck, it's a tough ride but you can do it. Beware of bigger cities, Indy, STL, KC on your route. While I am not familiar if rush hour are problems at these cities, be wary of it. And as you know construction is a killer too. Good luck and let us know how you make out |

Iron Butt fever must be in the air. I just completed a Bun Burner Gold this weekend. I started at 9 PM Friday evening in Fredericksburg VA and traveled I95 to New Smyrna Beach FL and back in 22 Hours. My original plan was to launch the ride on Friday June 8th, but severe east coast thunderstorms that evening led me to believe I would be unable to complete the ride on time, so to be safe I pushed the ride back one week. The bike performed well and mileage per gallon was pretty good. The reserve light came on at 155 miles on average on the way down, but on the way back I was able to ride my normal 185 miles before seeing the indicator. Might have been riding into a headwind going south. Not sure why else the mileage would be less. My Uly is pretty much stock with the exception of Rox Risers and an Airvent seat pad that someone on this board recommended. The Airvent worked great. A taller screen than stock would have been a plus, but the wind was not really that bad, unless I was directly behind an 18 wheeler. Ordered a Zero Gravity from American Sportbike a while back and it should be here this week. All in all a great trip. |

Congrats Dirt, wow 22 hours is real good! Even with the extra fuel I wasn't able to make time that well. Know what you mean about the 18 wheelers, I don't think any shield would help that kind of buffeting, congrats again and great job! chopped58 |
