The "Maliaire" flows 400 cfm's and is apparently, very popular with the Buell crowd. *Open link and scroll down to see Maliaire* http://www.steelthundercc.com/buell_parts.html The Forcewinder is also popular with the Buellers(bling factor)but the specs must be top secret, as even Force reps cant seem to give up the information. (Simple CFM rating is ALL im asking for! Sheesh!!!) Both of these air cleaners are comparable in price, but performance is what really matters to me. Has anyone here used both of these, and which did you like better and why? *Knee clearance/appearance is not a factor for me. Its strictly performance. Thanks for the input. |

Did you check out the thread with the dyno test on a Forcewinder in the archives? If it's strictly performance... I'm thinking a gutted breadbox with a venturi ring might be the best choice. Looks like crap, though... |

The MaliAire actually only rates at 346 cfm, Crossroads Performance makes them .. see http://www.crossroadsperformance.com/ecommerce/os/ catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=80 I have one on my S1 ..see photos of it on the bike here (thread from a couple days ago) http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/281248.html?1180883323 And it must not hurt performance any, see my thread from yesterday ... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/282881.html?1181100033 (not a stock S1 motor though .. but I figure the air cleaner didn't hurt anything) Personally - I don't think the Forcewinder looks very good on a Buell... just seems out of place... The small MaliAire air cleaner fits perfect and has that raw edgy look that matches the Buell look ... (very similar to the K&N round open air cleaner offered by American Sport Bike) ... the venturi ring is also machined into the back plate on the MaliAire, which is nice .. although it is a tad on the pricey side ... |

I was never a fan of the Forcewinder. I felt compelled to get one just because it was hanging on a wall at a HD dealer. I realize now, it's the only filter that will fit without my knee banging into it. I'd rather have something else, but I haven't found anything more appropriate... certainly not the CF hamcan race filter. I'm stuck with the Forcewinder for the time being... but it has finally grown on me to some extent. |

I love the forcewinder also because of the knee clearance. I think they look good too, clean and simple. As for performance, I have the forcewinder intake and WileyCo exhaust and I dyno'd at 78 hp at the rear wheel. Everything else is stock on my 2002 M2 |

Again...thanks for the input, guys. I did read that thread Dj. I just cant find it again. As for gutting the breadbox...Maybe I lied a little when I said that appearance doesnt matter. I definately like the look of either cleaner over that bulky black box. Tattood- Maybe the one Im looking at is different somehow. Maybe a 54 cfm diff isnt anything to worry about.IDK Thx for the info, guys. |

Most aircleaners ( that you'd put on your Buell, I'm not counting H-D bling things ) flow more than good enough for a stock motor. In my experience, based on jetting, the gutted stock airbox & carbon fibre race ham can, flow about equal, enough for some serious performance mods. Sorry, I don't have numbers, but more than enough. Knee clearance, stock box or forcewinder, are probably best. I hit the race can with my knee on hard braking. Looks good, though, so it's on. Vanity. |

Went the "ECONO WAY" ... Use the stock AIR BOX SNORKEL, filled the holes, painted blacker, and put a K&N air filter on it ... It will fit in the OEM AIR BOX and if "i" want to look racie "i" just put it on with out the AIR BOX ... It is a better TUNED intake than any after market or Scream'n Eagle for BUELL intake ... Forcewinder sucks (no pun intended) for higher HP numbers. Phat J and I were doing various XB heads on Tuber builds and squeezin ponies out of them and the Force always restricted flow. IE Ham can style aircleaner with X1 cams, XB heads, 40mm Kehien and KT exhaust was yielding 92 HP Slapped on the force and bam 86HP And yes we tuned it in. that 90* bend is what kills your ponies when you are lookin for more air flow. |

I read that the bend in the Forcewinder may affect flow as well. Something about the angle at which the air is forced to move/bend before actual intake...I dont know. The Maliaire's lookin pretty good, though. Maybe this will turn out to be an experiment in trial and error. |

yes laffy taffy we compared torque, but was very minimal... so, the force is fine for stock bikes, but if your lookin for big numbers, the force dosent suck... |

I have no clue of numbers, however, I installed a jet kit, Vance and Hines can, and for intake I painted the box, to match the embrodery on my seat and used a K&N Filter. Bike is noticeably improved, torque and top end. Photo Attached.

C'mon Blake I am the Rossie of all things Buell you didn't think that was the first thing I checked Tourqe is nice but HP is the real number. Don't believe me? Wht does a 1000cc inline 4 get from 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds with 40to 50 ft lbs? I know what your thinkin, "But the power and the RPM's and blah blah blah" Go ride a liter bike and tell me that matters, you will be lofting the front wheel with a slight twist of the throttle.

Yeah in physics you are correct but let me know how the 50ft lb of torqe liter bike treats you... And BTW both are a mathematical equations used to describe work and movement. |

I love this pointless argument. It's like asking if mom is stronger than dad. They probably won't duke it out to see who wins but neither one will win alone. You can't have HP without torque or visa versa. So what's the point? RPMs make speed and we all know the rice burners have us beat there. But most of us agree that having useful power without having to rev the shit out of it is much better than the big numbers produced at high RPMs. WE OWN THE CORNERS PERIOD! Try that with any other bike pushing big numbers and they end up high-siding or running off the road. I've seen tons of R1 parts strewn all up and down the twisty parts where I live. I can't say I've ever seen Buell parts strewn anywhere but I have seen several Buells hanging out and having fun. Must mean something? BC Steve |

But LaFayette, that big ugly goiterous airbox must go. If offends my elitist design sensibilities you know. Tut tut cheerio. Ride, lean, smile, torque to live, I say the issue is that without a decent amount of torque, the bike ain't as much fun, just like without a decent amount of HP the bike ain't as much fun. If I know the mass of a bike and rider and have a stopwatch and a smooth strip of straight and level pavement, I can determine it's HP pretty darn accurately. To find it's engine torque, I'd have to know a whole bunch of other stuff. You tell me which one is the more basic or real performance parameter. |

Blake: That AIR BOX idea goes back to the air collector system of the KRTT's time at "DAYTONA" ... The sticker you saw on it says it all !!! Do not think Erik ever designed anything for straight line riding ... He did the FXRT which was a FINE "BIG TWIN" ... The the only thing that comes some what close today it is the FXD ... The more basic or real performance parameter question is what do you plan to do with the motorcycle in question ... My plan is to get as much "TORQUE" on the ground as can be made using OEM "PRODUCT IMPROVED" parts ... Just what in the "BUELLschitte" does that mean ... Well, guess "i" will have to do it to prove it ... In BUELLing LaFayette |

Spidey, just make that lump of a motor rev to 9000 rpm and you'll get your 150 HP (assuming you stay near 90ft-lbs torque anyways) |

Mbsween: The XBRR tach's shifts at 8500 RPM if "i" am correct ... "AND" one was taching 9K or 9500 RPM at DAYTONA ... "BUT" tractor engines can be made to "REV" and it still could not run with a HONDA CBR600RR ... |
