I have a deck cleaning/treating project that should get done this season. My house is 5 years old this season and gets hammered by winter weather.

My question for you guys is 2 fold, 1) what would you suggest for cleaning and 2) what would you suggest as a treatment?

I'm not staining, I like the look of the treated wood as is.

Thanks in advance

Pressure washer, no soap.
It gets rid of the green color, but you do want some kind of sealer. The washer opens up the grain. I use Thompsons, an airless spray gun, and if I fail to clean up properly, ( don't ) it's now disposable. I buy cheap guns, because I've failed to clean up good enough before, & probably will again. The cheap gun is dedicated to deck sealing.

You can buy a cheap sprayer that is made just for the heavier base of the sealer like Thompson's. I used a regular weed type sprayer but it wasn't real happy about it.

I pressure wash with a bleach solution and then seal with Thompsons using an airless gun. Bought my gun from wallyworld for about $50. It's been reliable enough to use it to paint fences and decks for three seasons now.

I clean my wood regularly if I can't get someone else to do it for me.

You may also want to check out a procuct called CWF. It comes in clear or a cedar color.

It works very well, and also has uv protection greater than Thompsons.

Home Depot or Lowe's usually carry it.

I clean my wood regularly. All it takes is a little elbow grease.

Thompsons is inferior to other sealers. The smart folks at the lake use Olympia deck sealant which includes parafin to thoroughly seal their docks up. No deck takes a beating worse than a wooden dock on a sun scorched, wind-blown, wave spraying lake. It takes two good treatments to really saturate the decking. It is expensive, but it is well worth it.

I hear the Olympia is good, I'll try it next time.

I would only use bleach if you have stains that won't come out with plain water or Soap & water. I find plain water is usually enough to get the green out.

Tim, scrubbing your wood with Drano crystals is also bad.

I don't remember the brand, I first used a Craftsman, let the sealer sit too long, ( like 1 1/2 hours, no excuse ) and it hardened in the gun. Next time I bought a cheap one & I've gone through 2. It seems best to dedicate a sprayer. One I "went through", I sealed the deck, cleaned it pretty good, then when I tried to paint a fence, blotch city.

I use the cheapest bleach that I can find and if there's any stains, like around the grill, some powdered laundry detergent and a little scrubbing will do wonders. Pressure wash and you're golden.

Use Olympia and use a hand-pump garden sprayer to apply it. Once you finish spray a quart of boiling water through and you're good to go. Thompson's products, the one's I have experience with, suck.

My decks take abuse out the whazzoo, BBQ, hoards of young adults, swimming pool, and the above method works great.

I would never use a pressure washer, it tears up the wood.

Consumer Reports rated Olympic as the best clear deck sealer. I cleaned mine with their cleaner and then followed up with their sealer. I don't recall the part number, but CR listed the Olympic at $13/gallon. Seems pretty danged reasonable.

As a former rep for one of the preservative mfgrs, may I sugggest that you consult the chemical co websites for good info, [treated wood dot com] is where I used to work,

bleach and other strong chemicals are not a good idea, not only are you running the risk of damage to your wood, but you may reduce the life of the fasteners as well. As the uncoated steel fasteners will rust quickly if the galvanize is removed or damaged.

I have no suggestion as to protectant to apply to the existing structure, for repairs any of the Arch Chemical treatments rated for the service are good.

ALL =====

DO NOT RELY ON THE IN STORE ADVICE THE CLERKS KNOW LESS ABOUT T.W. THAN HD SALESMEN (TYPICAL ONES) KNOW ABOUT BUELLS
THERE ARE 3 MAJOR PLAYERS IN THE MARKET NOW

VIANCE ( FORMERLY CSI )
OSMOSE
AND ARCH

These guys all have websites with information on the proper usage of their products (the finished goods that is).

If you have any questions about Treated wood feel free to PM me off board I will answer them if I can.

its good to have clean wood...

Nice XB9ser!

This is how you pimp AK wood

Its built from a romanian kit and US receiver. A friend gave me some better wood and I spent alot of time sanding and clearcoating, buffing and clearcoating. Underfolder is polish I think.
