I removed the right side front tie bar bolt (the one that threads into the block and holds the clutch cable) to allow better access to the clutch cable for an adjustment and lube. After completing the clutch cable work, I reinstalled the tie bar bolt. The bolt broke (mid shaft) before it seemed to seat. The manual says tighten to 25 –27 ft-lbs. I don’t think I was beyond 20 or so, but was using a non-torque wrench to start/seat the bolt. Questions: Is the value of 25-27 ft-lbs correct? Is there a tie bar bolt and isolator sequence that is critical or should I be able to install a replacement bolt without doing some other procedure? Has anyone else had a problem with these bolts failing? Any help would be appreciated. Atwoodca |

I own a 97 S3 Thunderbolt and experience failure with the "female stud". The casing around the threaded hole crack and then broke. I was able to fixed it with JB weld, but it won't last. The torque on the lower tie bar bolt on my bike is 30 ft/lbs, so I suspect your torque value is correct. It's important to put the correct tension on the bolt for correct chassis function. An incorrect torque can cause the tie bar bolt failed. Your hole could be stripped. That's my problem, I can't get but 12 ft/lbs on my bolt, thus the stud fail. Good luck with your repair. |
