hey guys;
When I go to start my bike ('04 XB12S -recently new to me ) I hit the starter and sometimes (~50% of the time) there is a pause of approx. 1 second before anything happens, then she kicks and starts right up - I am guessing battery or charging system - any ideas? |

Mine does the same ('05 XB12R).
Has done since day one, if I remember right.
Especially if there's been a slight pause between starts. |

My 04 XB12R started doing the same thing recently. I wouldn't care too much except it shorts out the trip odometer (similar to if the battery is disconnected). Not to big of a deal but seems to point towards a bigger issue. Any thoughts or remedies.

If it doesn't start right up or if the odometer resets to zero, that's an indication of a battery problem. Trickle charging may help, but only delay the day when it doesn't start. So, whether it's old, has high internal impedance, can't hold a charge or has a defective cell, the fix is to replace it with a fully charged battery. |

Residue also builds up in the starter button. Check that too.
I have a weird one for ya: My bike starts in gear intermittently. If it won't start when in first gear, I put it in neutral and it starts right up. My bike's not equipped with the safety switch on the kick stand either. |

It's probably the battery cables. They do not tighten up well enough due to the bolt being too long. Remove your battery cable, add a washer or two to the bolt and retighten them. You can run a wire brush over the terminals and ends of the cables to be sure there is good contact. That should do it. |
