Why don't we start by saying what we can contribute to the cause... I'm a programmer. When I was a kid (10 or 11) I used to write 8 bit machine language programs 'cause it was fun... Now I do far more boring programming. I'm also a gearhead through and through. Though I don't currently have an FI bike, I'd love to put some time into dissassembling the code. Why don't we start with someone cracking the ECM open and try to tell us what microcontroller is in there... -Saro |

My contribution. I'll disect mine tonight, after I get it open I'll digital picture or tell you what I see. I have a fuel injected bike but have no clue what 8 bit machine language is. Jeff |

Saro, What can I contribute? Not as much as I'd like. I know enough about programming (mostly perl/cgi stuff to boot) to be dangerous, nothing more. But I do know a little bit about EFI systems, and will do what ever I can...I'd love to see this project come to fruition. There's quite a bit of "how it works" in the service manual, I'll scan it this weekend (or first of the week) and post it...might be of use. What we really need is a corp-spy type hacker to just steal the damn BMC software, instead of re-inventing the wheel. I don't want to sell it for profit, or sell it period, I just want to tinker w/ my DDFI setup. Neil Garretson X0.5 |

I'll definitely contribute! If you guys figure out the electronics, I'll right the code. Have lots of embedded code experience for both single-board computers and real-time operating systems. My last fun project was to re-program the company's elevator!! I can now check what floor it's on over the internet!! I'm getting my X1M next week, lots of time to hack till spring comes around.

Dudes what about Haltech/Motech/Inject type programable ecu's .Just connect to laptop or adjust through panel on case .No need to break codes etc.Ross |

Count me in and post those pictures. I can help with some of the actual electrical interfaces as well... though I don't know if I still have the patience to do assembly, much less reverse engineer it. Great bait though... |

Cheers, I didn't jump in here to debate (and I won’t) or upset anyone, just one old wise hooligans’ observation and opinion. BTW I've messed with a little programming too. From my experience, it isn’t prudent for a group of energetic individuals to publicly declare, organize, and then orchestrate their intents to hack and possibly disassemble code in a public conference area. I'm out'a here, -JW:>) |

JW, Do you think? Anyway, I don't think we should hack or reverse engineer the existing ECMs. I say re-engineer them. Start with a clean slate. I've been thinking about this for a couple of years since I got my first X-1 and the the fuel injection was giving me so much trouble. (it no longer is, BTW, I just want more performance, and tweakability.) Take a Palm Pilot or Handspring and wire it up to the inputs. Then you would have a Dynojet PCIII and a Scanalyzer all in one. With more software, you would even have a rolling dynomometer. If you mounted the PDA on the handlebars during development, you could adjust it in real-time. You can buy refurbished Handspring's for $90.00 these days. You would have to code from a Macintosh with Code Warrior, but it could be doable. Jim X-2.5 |

Walbro is the place you go for information on the inputs and outputs... http://www.walbro.com/products/twowheeledvehiclesover250.shtm Here is another good site for info... http://www.walbro-tdd.com/Data/English/index_eng.html

Started dissasembly of the ECM last night. Might take a while to get to the top of the board, seems to be potted in a substance similar to a rubber pen eraser. I got it close to the components, but cannot uncover them easily while trying to keep printed indetifiers intact. I'll keep you posted. Anyone know of an easy way to remove this compound, I've never seen it before, usually I see hard epoxy or tar potting in my line of work. Jeff |

I'm game! I'd love to hook -up my notebook to my ECM! If you guys need cables, I can find a place to get the connectors and make the cables. I not a hack but I into electronics (Ham radio) willing to use my S3 as a ginny pig... Mike I over heard Erik say a few years ago that he was suprised that no one has hack into the ECM yet. |

There is a guy at Innovative Motorcycle Research, Rich I think, who has done this. I talked to him, but didn't like his selling style. Everything he has is the best everything anyone else has is junk and I should "throw it in the garbage". Including Nallin heads/1250 kit, Force Pipe, Powercommander & race ECM? Some of it has to be good. He might be right, supposed to have made lots of HP (110RW)with all stock components except exhaust and reprogrammed ECM. Maybe he has, but he came across as a know-it-all jerk, so I guess I'll never know-it-all. My business will go elsewhere to Nallin/American Sportbike, at least they know how to talk to people. If you have had good experience with Rich, great, not trying to badmouth the guy or trying to keep business from going his way, just my experience. Jeff |

I met Rich one day at Kosco HD/Buell in NJ last summer. I got a similar impression, although I didn't hear him badmouth anything, just really proud of his work. He was a BIG proponent of the dual pipe muffler. Can't recall the brand, but I've seen pics of it on this board. It keeps the exhausts separated, no collector, even in the one piece muffler. Rich also had his own proprietary breather system for his race bike. Rich claimed he could get 100RWHP from an X1 without removing the heads. If I lived in the area, he's probably the guy I would have work on my engine. He ain't cheap though!! |

That would be the exhaust system I saw at CyleRama one day. What was that Pammy? BORLA, yea, that was it. |
