So I was checking the tread on my original equipment Pirelle Scorpions and I noticed on my front tire that I have some small faint dry rotting right above the bead. Now it’s nothing that concerns me, but it makes me a little annoyed that my Built MAY 06 bike with 5200 miles is already showing dry rot before I can wear the tires out. I also checked the dates on the tire sidewall and I think (I will double check when I get home) it was 1505 which is 15th week of 2005. The Rear was 3605 36th week of 05. So the tires are not too much older then the bike. I also was pretty religious about storing my bike on a plank of wood so that my tires were not in direct contact with the cold concrete in my unheated garage. But I rode a few times all winter and I think the longest it sat was 3 weeks. Well I remember setting up my warranty with Pirile so I am hoping I might be able to get a free tire out of them, I just don't want to go through the hassle of replacing half warn tires especially with everyone saying that its near impossible not to scratch the rim. Anyone else seen this? on the Pirelles? | ||

5200 miles on a set of tires doesn't seem bad to me. I got 7500 kilometers (about 4600 miles) out of my 208's. Those Scorpions must really hold up. | ||

On my 05 9sx with the Scorpions, I get about 6000 out of a rear, but closer to 9000 out of a front. IMHO the tires would probably be better off sitting on clean concrete then sitting on a chunk of wood. So you still probably got 6/9ths of the life of the tire... it could be worse. | ||

I had 6k on the stock dunlops and they were cupping, but not dry rotting. It would be worth a shot to get ahold of Pirelli and see if the warranty could take care of something like that.. | ||

maybe I am mistaken, but "dry rot" - the fine cracking of the sidewall near the rim> is caused by moisture trapped in the tire itself- like when it is aired up with compressed air that has a lot of water vapor in it. Gas station air is famous for it...may be tough to have a warranty on a tire but, good luck | ||

I had 7000 on the rear before I changed mine and still have the original front on at 10000 with tread left to go. No rot here. Ken | ||

i doubt it's really dry rot.... either way, blame dunlop.... but seriously... come up with an accurate description. | ||

just USE THEM UP. wear down all that excess tread, and put your new set on. | ||

a set of tires lasts you more than a year?? jehosephat, I'm lucky to get 3 months of months out of mine ( 24,000km and I'm just at the one year mark now...thats with 2 1/2 months not riding in out canadian winter, too) good luck with Pirelli, but chances are they'll tell you that the tires weren't installed & maintained correctly, voiding any specified or implied warranty. |
