Hi, I test rode an '01 S3T that had been stored for 2 years, old gas, no Stabil, and it had a bad mis on idle and while driving. Never seemed to clear up. If new fuel doesn't fix it, are there any common problems I can look for? I can handle cleaning injectors, but I don't want to buy the bike if it needs a new harness or ignition system! Thanks! |

It's probably tune-up stuff. See if you can take out and look at the spark plugs. If the misfires are being caused by semi-clogged injectors, resulting in sufficient fuel mixture, I dunno, I would think the plugs would look kinda clean, maybe a little bit whitish. However, if one looks normal and the other looks fouled, that could mean a bad spark plug wire or something ignition related. Regarding cleaning injectors, there's a filter screen on the fuel pump that might need cleaning too, as an FYI. |

Spray carb cleaner at the backside of the intake (from the left side of the bike). If it stumbles, you need intake gaskets. Relatively simple...for a contortionist with a short allen wrench |

I dunno, I have an '01 that needed a new ECM. I recall people telling me that some of the '01's just had ECM's from the factory. It just misfired horribly at about 2800 RPM's when under light to moderate throttle. |

INTAKE SEALS!! My `01 had been sitting for 2 years also, when I bought it last fall. You can read about my trials and tribulations in my profile - I sorta journaled it. I would suggest water from a garden hose to test your seals - in a good strong mist. I never could get the carb cleaner/WD40/ect. to work. And, chemcials can degrade the seal and make it worse. I tested the seals that way 3 times, and not until the end with I used water - in fairly large volume did I get the idel to change. My leak might have just been in a goofy spot though... Good Luck. It wasn't that tough to replace the seals, but Ratbull isn't kidding about those intake manifold bolts. I ended up cutting and grinding down an allen wrench, using a ball ended allen wrench, and about 3 other homemade permutations of extensions and wobbles and all kind of things to try to get on those screws. I'll be lucky to get them off again next time they're so chewed up... You might want to get some replacement hardware so you can put new ones in. The old ones may end up rounded off or damaged by the time you get them out. Damn allen bolts.... |

Thanks, good advice all. The suggestion about a bad ECM, how do you know when it's bad? The owner did take the bike in because it was flooding and wouldn't start, they reset the ECM? and replaced plugs. Now it starts, but misses. Would the dealer have found codes with a bad ECM? I'll see if I can try the intake seal tests. Thanks! |

A Buell is a very simple bike. Use the fact that it has misfire to get it for a nice low price.. Then change intake seals. 1hr job - few buck for seals and a allenwrench that you'll cut to make shorter. Dump the old gas. New gas. New Plugs. Then see what happens. My guess is it will have been fixed, if not try some fuel system cleaner and a long HARD ride. Was the bike stored inside and dry? If not disconnect all electrial connections. Clean use dielectric grease and hook back up. BTW- you can convert the bike to carb and normal ignition and get away from ECU, fuel injection. |

I'd suspect the ECM last and verify everything else is working first. There were some bad ECMs floating around, but it was pretty rare from what I have read here. If it isn't the Intake seals, it could be one of the temprature sensors, or an intermittent wiring problem or Partially clogged fuel injectors like Sparky mentioned. Even though my intake seals ended up being the ultimate culprit - I ran a strong mixture of Techron through the bike first, and that did help a little, but didn't comepletely resolve the problem. (edit) +1 on Ryker's post. (Message edited by naustin on May 25, 2007) |

I believe it spent the 2 years in a dry garage and never got exercised. It was washed shortly before I saw it... hmm... The owner put fresh gas in since I was there and said it "seems better". I'll take another look with a can of carb cleaner and report back. Thanks again! |

Hi Seventy, My 2001 S3 had only 2200 miles when I purchased it 8 months ago. It also had a bad stumble, cutting out at 2000 to 3000 rpm. The diagnostic software found error code 11, which told me to replace the throttle position sensor (TPS). It runs like a champ now. I would think all the FI bugs are worked out by 2001. Its an awsome bike, if the mileage is not too high, and it is well maintained...BUY IT! Cheers. |
