Ever since I bought my bike (used, not new) it seems to surge alot. I dont know if this is just a V-twin thing or not. It only really does it at constant speed and throttle... or crusing. Never under acceleration or decelleration. Any thoughts on a potential problem??? |

You know that brings up a good point: Its probably been fixed like 4 times now, but ive noticed a nocking noise from the primary... and everytime ive been in for service (oil or whatever) ive had them address it and they say it was the primary chain. However, it keeps coming back! Maybe something is just worn... but I dont know what it would be. I really dont know much about the drive train portion of a motorcycle. |

I've had the same knocking/clinking noise get temporarily fixed by the dealer with a primary chain adjustment and then in another 2500 miles, the noise is back. I guess you can only adjust the primary chain so much. See my post a couple messages down. My local dealer went as far as replacing the primary cover. Next, they replaced the clutch cable. After calling them today, they still aren't sure if it will fix the problem. Supposedly, they heard another noise after changing the primary cover. I'll update my initial post when I get the bike back. They've had it since May 5th. |

The engine drive sprocket nut is known to loosen on the XB series engines. That is probably contributing to your problem by allowing the sprocket to rock back and forth on the shaft, creating extra wear on the chain. There is a service advisory bulletin to remove, clean, apply red Loctite, and torque the nut to an uprated spec value than what is in the service manuals. The correct value is noted in the Knowledge Vault here on the BadWeb. |

The surging at constant speed could be caused by the close loop operation of the O2 sensor failing. |

"How would I check that O2 Sensor for problems?" For one thing, the operation of the Check Engine Lamp is a clue (if XB12 EFI is the same as an XB9). After the initial 4 second period from Key-On, the CEL will either: 1) go off. This is normal if there are no error codes. 2) go off for 4 seconds and come on for 8 seconds. This means there is a historic code stored but no current code. 3) stay on. This means a current error code exists. If the error code is 13 (O2 sensor), then you need to troubleshoot the O2 sensor and/or its wiring. |

If the surging is minor then it is almost certainly normal and due to the overly lean operation of the engine during steady, light loads at small throttle openings. It drives me nuts and I'm trying to solve the problem. There are about 100 different solutions out there and they are all expensive. |

Well its not the O2 Sensor then... cause the check engine light never comes on during operation. Is it possible to re-flash the stock ECM with something more appropriate for the way that I want to ride? I know there is a factory Race ECM, but I dont trust my local dealer enough to install it, and I dont have the tools to do it myself |

I have a 2004 xb12s with race ecm and experience the same symptoms... like poor carburetion, not enough to consider it a problem but, I'm new to the Buell experience. I kinda chocked it up to too tall of gearing mixed with a not so hot fuel injection system. I find it extremely odd that a fuel injection system can be so unsorted, especially with so much claimed R&D behind it... There is no excuse to me for a fuel injected engine to sputter, cough and stall no matter how cold it is, and then surging at constant speeds... just my opinion but, you would never see this from a Honda... Not trying to start anything with that comment but Jeez, get yer sh8t together! I've owned Honda's for years and been on numerous message boards related to them and never read more than a hand full of problem posts, Buell forums are DOMINATED by them... what gives? One note though, I NEVER had a Lust for riding any Honda like I have for my Buell... It has renewed a Passion in me that was all but gone... With all it's quirks the Buell xb12s Lightning is the epitome of Character! Nothing I've ridden or seen draws a crowd like this bike, wherever you go people come up to you and comment on it... depending where you are sometimes it is literally a crowd that develops. I love the Buell but, don't care for the way too slow return to Idle when running hot and the cold start sputtering coughing and dying even with 95deg F ambient temps... I wish this beast had a choke! |
