I have a 2002 Buell Blast. I bought it in 2003 as a leftover. I have been riding it for the last 3 years. I just took it out of storage from the winter. I tried to start it but it will not run. It will initially start but won't stay running. We have put new gas into it and charged the battery real good. I have been reading that it could be the ignition. Has anyone had this specific problem? It is now sunny and I can look at my bike in the driveway. I figured I would research it some before my husband tears the whole bike apart to never put it back together again. |

Will start but won't stay running... I'd say just clean out the carb for a first go. -Saro |

Doubt if it's ignition related if it starts but doesn't run. When you stored the bike did you put a fuel stabilizer like Stabil in the tank and run it long enough to circulate the stuff through the carb? If not, I'll betcha the idle jet is probably clogged with the varnish-like goop that stale gasoline becomes when it sits longer than a month or two. Don't ask how I learned this little ditty with 9 cars/ motorcycles/ power mower & edger sitting around. |

If it isn't anything thats already been mentioned, change the intake manifold coupler. Thats the little rubber piece that connects the carb to the manifold. Small cracks in that are responsible for about 90% of Blast problems. You can get this aftermarket version which isn't so fragile: http://www.turbotime.us/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=1 EB0000-1130519024 |

My husband put a brand new spark plug in it. It did the same thing. It will initially start and run for about 10 seconds and then die. It will only start again if you leave it for a few minutes and try again. But it will not stay running for longer than 20 seconds. |

How do we clean the idle jets and/or carb? |

There is a product called carb cleaner that comes in aresol cans. You can take the airbox off and just try spraying it in the mouth of the carb, but that might not be good enough. The best would be to remove the carb, take it apart and clean it peice by peice and soak the jets to make sure they are free of gunk. If you do either of those things, Double and Triple check that intake manifold coupler. As was mentioned, the intake "boot" is responsible for the majority of Blast issues. I would have ruled that out 1st before even replacing the spark plug had it been me. (Message edited by naustin on May 22, 2007) In fact, spend the $15 and replace the carb boot - just for good measure. (Message edited by naustin on May 22, 2007) |

I'd remove the carburetor and then remove the float bowl and check/clean/verify proper setting and function of the float bowl needle valve. The Blast also has an automatic choke which I had failed to recall when first commenting on this issue. Might be a good idea to verify proper operation of the choke. Possibly disconnect it and try starting it to see what happens. The folks in the Thumper Forum will be able to better advise you on the choke issue. |

My husband had tried the spark plug, fuel, and carb. All looked good. He then removed a cover and tapped on the black box that was there and the bike started, ran and is still running. Thanks for all the help guys!!! |
