Here is what I can't understand; the local HD dealer said they couldn't order Buell parts for me since they stopped carrying the Buell line. I said, "no problem" because the parts I needed were identical (down to the part #) for Sportsters - it was just a primary gasket and an updated tensioner shoe, no big deal. After waiting two weeks for basic Harley parts that should have been in stock, I got a primary gasket and tensioner shoe for a Blast (won't work on my 2000 tuber). The parts guy took it upon himself to order the 'correct parts' because he didn't think I knew what I was talking about. Then I waited another 2 weeks for the parts I ordered in the first place. People who take that parts counter job seriously are superstars in my book, but they are few and far between. The absolute worst was the parts guy at the Suzuki dealer when I was a kid. He made my dad so mad once, I thought ol' dad was going to make him dance to some chin music. |

I quote the speedo insert on the Buell Blast that I used last weekend for the Rider's Edge Program. "Buell Motorcycles, a division of Harley Davidson Motor Company" Make of it what you will, but Buell is a Harley Davidson. I think that's something to be proud of, not to be ashamed of. Without HD's purchase of Buell, there may not be a Buell to talk about. |

Buell is NOT a Harley regardless of what may be stamped on a few pieces. Buell is a Buell(check your title) Harley is a Harley Buell is very much like Saleen. Saleen's sold through Ford dealers only but titled as Make: Saleen Model:S281 It don't say Mustang anywhere. Buell is using his own frames, brake design, secondary drive, and engine TUNING to build a bike that is INTENTIONALY NOT a HD just as much as Saleen is NOT another Mustang. |

It IS a Harley, period! You find Harley parts/logos all over the Buell. You do not see Buell logos on Harleys. You also do NOT find Renault parts on Ferarris or vice versa so that analogy really doesn't work. You should have used the GM analogy. A Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Skye are the same vehicle except for cosmetics. You see GM parts all over both of these parts. They're both GMs. |

My '99 has HD motor parts... the rest of the bike is Buell. My '04 has very, very few, if any, HD parts. They're both Buell's. When AMF owned HD, did that mean the bikes were made by a bowling ball company? NO!! HD was a separate company before they were acquired by AMF. Same goes for BMC. Hell no, it's not a Harley. |

Tunes, was AMF making seats for HD? No. HD is the drivetrain for Buell. Could you buy a HD at a Brunswick bowling ball distributor? No. But you sure can buy a Buell at a HD dealer. |

If it's not a Harley, how can you get into H.O.G. by owning one? |

I don't find it offensive to consider my Buells' as products of Harley-Davidson MOTOR company.Kinda like owning a Cadillac model XLR two seater knowing it's built on a Chevy EDIT: Corvette, platform (Message edited by Ducxl on May 22, 2007) |

Well .. none of my Paperwork says Harley on it ... but if I didn't think my Buell was a Harley at heart i wouldn't have bought it ... the looks and the soul were my inspiration to purchase my XB12Scg instead of a rice burner ... I knew I didn't want another Cruiser ... but I didn't want a rice rocket either ... |

The HD motor in the Buell frame is what sold me. Erik Buell provided the perfect solution for my motorcycle needs when I bought the XB12Scg. Buells will always be tied with the HD V-twin in history. Not a bad thing, just fact. |

Hey Matt (Trojan), My local Triumph dealer also sells Buells. That is the way forward, unfortunately none of the UK dealers do this, and are not allowed to by the importers. A few years ago my local dealer wanted to import hand built Borile bikes from Italy to sell alongside his H-D/Buell range, and even went so far as to buy the first bike as a demo. He was told in no uncertain terms that if he persisted then he would lose his franchise. The Borile is certainly not any direct competition for any of the H-D/Buell range, so what are they frightened of? |

Buell needed financial backing and got it from HD. That makes HD the parent organization for Buell. I am Buell, son of Harley Davidson, ruler of the free world, for I am the blackest of the black sheep. Until Buell can stand up on it's own, and market, sell and support the Buell bike line without assistance, it will belong to it's parent organization. Just like your children that never leave home. >>>Without HD's purchase of Buell, there may not be a Buell to talk about. That's an inaccurate statement. There would indeed be a Buell Motor Company if HD had not come along. Teaming up with Harley-Davidson was ONE of the options and the one that played out. It's a good thing and both companies have benefited from a classic "win-win" deal. Buell may have saved the Sportster. |

Ridrx, A Shelby Mustang is still a Mustang. Just as the Saleen is still a Mustang that has been modified, therefore it is a Mustang. Now if it were just the drivetrain, that would be different. A Cobra is in no way a Ford just because it has a Ford drivetrain. I don't think a Buell is a Harley in view of the fact that only the drivetrain comes from Harley. And still shares little in common with the Sportster the engines originally came from. But come on, a Saleen is a modified Mustang and most of them aren't even that modified. Simply throwing a few badges on it and barely changing the styling doesn't make it a different car, regardless of what the title says. |

Read what I posted Court..."there MAY not be a Buell" Just as accurate as saying "Buell MAY have saved the Sportster" right? "May" means maybe. |

Harley Davidson is the parent company. Buell is the rebellious misfit step-child. HD didn't make BMC but they adopted it and helped it grow. At the same time it's held Buell back in many ways. Hopefully, Buell will continue to grow and move further away from HD. Buell specific dealerships and Buell designed and built drivetrains would be two very important advances. I don't see them ever completely separating from HD though. |

The MSO, Certificate of Vehicle Origin Says the make is Buell manufactured by Buell Motorcycle Company. The VIN numbers are much different from a H-D. Someone said their paperwork says Make: H-D. I can change that any my computer as can any other dealership, that is how they decide to enter it. If I have a customer ask I sell BUELLS made by BUELL which is a seperate entity of Harley-Davidson. It is a Buell. Whatever, I'm damn proud to sell them and every customer of mine is damn proud to ride 'em! Nuff said |

From an interview with EB on Motorcycle.com "MO: Speaking of tradition, are most of the Buell buyers people who already have Harleys, or are they buying their first Harley as a Buell? Erik: Both.Since we're selling through the Harley-Davidson dealer network, all Buell dealers are also Harley-Davidson dealers. We are certainly getting a lot of riders off of other brands, and actually we're ahead of where we expected to be there. There's a great deal of work going on with training the dealerships, so they know how to deal with a new style of customer. The one thing that's really valuable is that the Harley-Davidson dealer network, in getting over the tough years of the early 1980s, learned a lot about making customers happy with their purchase and ownership of the motorcycle, things to do, making the whole Harley-Davidson ownership experience fun. That's valuable, and it's now going in to what we're doing." (Message edited by buellinachinashop on May 23, 2007) |
