I'm going to buy myself some new track boots, but I'm not sure which ones. I kind of have it narrowed down to 2 choices.
1. Alpinestars SMX-Plus
2. Gaerne GR-S
I will be using these for some amateur CCS racing, and track days so I want a good boot with good protection. I like the fact that the Alpinestars have an internal lacing system, but they are a bit more expensive than the Gaerne. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Any info will help.

Thanks,
Schmitty

I have the SMX-4 boots. They were comfortable from the moment I put them on.

The build for the SMX-Plus is basically the same. The European sizing is spot on. I wear a 45 (10.5) and it is exactly a 45.

I looked at the SMX-Plus boots, but I planned to use them 85% street 15% track. The SMX-4 seemed better suited for street use.

SMX - I've crash-tested two pair in 5 years racing on 7 different occasions. My first pair were crashed 6 times - one over 130 mph. Second pair have been crash-tested once. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know they should've been replaced after the first crash but I'm a real cheap-o.

They're not comfortable for walking but great for racing or street riding with a walk from the parking lot to the table to grab a burger. They're RIDING boots after all.

Good ankle support.

I can't speak to the newer versions.

I bought a pair of Alpinestar SMX's on eBay, after extensive on line research.

I liked the internal boot, the wrap around ankle support,
and the general design details. However this is not a boot you would want to walk around in, or wear all day.

I had a problem with my size 11 EE shoe size, as most boots are not available in wide fitting. I did find that the Aplinestar size 46, (11.5) fit just fine.

Always good to try on a similar pair, as size does vary between manufacturers.

I have the Gaerne GR-S. I found I couldn't do up the zipper with my leathers under the boot. They are not bad in the rain (not fully water proof but far better than many). They will be my winter boots.

I just got the new Sidi vertigo corsa about 3 weeks ago. They are 100 times a superior boot but only double the cost. You can also walk in them.

If you are really considering the Gaernes, bring your leathers.
