CEL came on so there must be error codes to check. This would be a great first step: to determine what the EFI sees as a problem. If you don't know how to do this, I'm pretty sure the procedure is explained in the Knowledge Vault in the BadWeb. No expensive tools are required, just patience and a jumper wire. In the meantime, you might try turning the handlebars left and right while looking at the wire harness around the steering neck. Check every wire where the harness lays against the frame or engine. If you see any wire insulation that looks damaged, pinched or showing exposed wire, that is quite possibly the culprit. Note: shorts in the wire harness might trip error codes that would indicate a faulty sensor or component when actually the suspect part is OK. So knowing what error codes are set can be considered a clue, not a gospel, hard-core, black or white indicator of the root cause of the problem. Sleuthing is fun, ain't it? |

Common problem areas are under the flyscreen, around the ECM, and the tail light assembly. |

Friday night, couple of beers and a multimeter. started doing misfire diag, front cylinder not firing, checked for fuel and spark, no spark, pulled ignition coil to bench test, found coil almost cracked in half and bleeding white goo. I believe I've found the problem. My concern is what caused the coil to fail? or just a defective part? |

If the new one suffers a similar fate, then start to be concerned. Otherwise, life is good. |
