Tore engine apart(had some work done on the cases), just removed trans as a whole never touch a thing on trans. Now going back together it does not have neutral and tranny seems to lock up in some gears can't remember which gears. I know 5th does not lock up for sure. Any help would be greatly appreciative. 99 M2 |

Did you adjust the shifter pawl as per the manual? What did your 5th gear drive assembly look like when you had the tranny out? It stays captive in the case, and is poorly lubricated (meaning it can rust badly). |

No, i did not adjust it, i didn't think i had to, i never touch anything i removed it and reinstalled it and i don't have a manual. 5th gear assemby looks good. |

Not to hijack, but when you pulled the trans unit, did you have to remove the HUGE (looks to be 1-7/8") nut and the front belt pulley, or did it come out without having to mess with the pulley? Seems my mainshaft is stuck and the only thing I can think is I have to remove that pulley to get it out (98 S1W). And of course, nobody has a 1-7/8" socket in stock. Grr. |

No, as I recall, you do not have to remove that bolt on the pulley, or the pulley. In fact, you can't get that 5th gear drive assembly out of the bike without pulling the tranny first. Adjusting that shifter pawl could explain "no neutral", but I don't know how it would explain locking up in various gears. |

Ratbuell, no i did not have to pull the front belt pulley off. I have seen where the main shaft and needle bearings rust, maybe that is what your experiencing. You should be able to pull the tranny with the trap door bolts removed and shifter shaft nuts removed. Pop the rubber seal out of the belt pulley bolt(1-7/8") and inspect for rust. |

Ok i figured why my trans was locking up. When i had the case work done they removed the pulley and must have remove the bearing from the 5th gear. Well they did not install the bearing completely on the 5th gear assembly when they put it back in the case which cause the 5th gear dogs to hit when the should not have. Now my question is how do you normally get the bearing out without destroying the case? Special tool!!, i'm going to make a tool to press the bearing back on the 5th gear shaft for now. |

Yes, there are two special tools. I built tools to do it, and it went fine. I put pictures and descriptions in the knowledge vault. It was about $25 worth of various steel bits and hardware parts, now that I can weld I could build up a much better tool then what I used. I'd be happy to ship you my tools, but it would probably cost as much to ship them as it would for you to buy them at the local hardware store, and it would just take you longer to get them, and you could probably do better building on my experience. I'll still be happy to ship them if you want them though, or if you don't have tools around to make rough cuts on metal. We can just pass them around badweb as necessary. I cant remember which way the lip goes on the case, I seem to remember it holding the bearing to keep it from falling into the case (rather then to keep it from falling out of the case). If that is so, then it seems like you could seat that bearing (by the outer race) without ruining it without even pulling the tranny (or the 5th gear drive assembly). The tougher tool is the one to press the needle bearings inside that 5th gear assembly. I took it to the shop (off bike) and they charged me an hour of labor to press out t he old and press in the new (and looked annoyed with it when they gave it back, so they probably used every bit of that hour). Hey! Those pictures are handy! I can see the lip now... you would definitely have to pull the tranny... But if you just have to seat that 5th gear drive assembly in the bearing, you only need the "easy" tool (2" or 2.5" heavy conduit and a long bolt or threaded rod as I recall). |

Thanks for the offer Reepicheep, but i'm so far behind schedule on this project that i had to make my own. Everything went well, i removed the old bearing, installed a new bearing and seated it. Now the tranny acts normal. Again thanks for your input and generosity. Radon |
