All, I have a loud noise coming from the primary on my 00' Lightning. I have checked the clutch adjustment and primary chain adjustment per the service manual. It is coming from the clutch basket end of the primary. You can put your hand on the primary and actually feel where the noise is coming from. This is probably not a new issue. Thanks in advance. |

Time to open the primary up and see what is loose. Might just be the spring plate in clutch. |

Probably a broken primary chain tensioner, no big deal if you fix it without running it anymore. Get the new updated part, and the new metal primary gasket. |

Have already had the cover off, tensioner is good, chain and sprockets show no damage, no loose parts, the sound is coming from the upper right portion of the primary. Sounds like something is hitting the cover when the engine is running |

How much free play is there in the primary chain? |

Not to beat a dead horse, but did you check the back plate of the tensioner and make sure it's not cracked? The plastic often stays in place, and in fact the metal backplate often stays in place, but it's cracked so the threads don't hold it anymore. It will adjust fine, but then after the first hard run it goes loose again. |

All, I checked the chain adjustment with the view port off and the bike running. It is not a tensioner problem. I inspected it when I had the cover off and it was intact. Chain is adjusted within spec. A Sportster owner told me it might be a defective clutch. He said the problem wouldn't rear it's head unless the clutch was spinning. Possible?? Still got my Softail, down but not out!! |

If it was the spring plate coming apart (a not uncommon failure) you would probably have found bits and pieces of the rivets and flat brass springs in the primary. And the clutch would not feel or work normal. That brings the suspects down to the things behind the clutch. Things like the detent clip coming off and the pins on the drum backing out. You can do some inspection for those problems with a dental mirror and a flashlight. Bounce the light off the mirror and look for rub marks on the back of the clutch basket, see if the detent clip is on and seated, look at the other stuff back there. If that does now show anything I'd probably want to pull the alternator bell, clutch, and primary chain as a unit for further inspection. Jack |

Jack, Thanks for the info, looks like I'm diving back into the primary cover this weekend. |
