Just finished my 5K mile service, which includes changing the primary fluid. Pretty straight forward. Put new Sny3 in. I used to be able to snick through the gears (clutchless) very smoothly and accurately. Unfortunately I drained the fluid before looking to see the old level. The tech manual is very black and white as to where the level belongs. I think I may have it a bit too full.

Now when I try clutchless upshifts, it seems to slip, rev freely, then bang into gear.

Thoughts?

With the inspection cover off, and the bike straight upright (not on the stand), the fluid level should be just at / touching the bottom of the teeth of the large gear in there. Might need a flashlight to see it well.

Too much fluid will make for rough shifts. I'll bet that's your problem.

It needs a quart. No more, no less.

Midnyte and others, I need to drain some off. I went a bit over those "teeth". I errored on the side over overfull. I figured this was my issue, just wanted to check my sanity.
Thanks guys!

For what it's worth, the bike came from the factory with formula + in the primary not syn 3.

True but, the last time it was changed it got SNY3.

Just buy 1 quart. As long as you drain it all, you can't mess up! I appreciate the ease.

I think one full quart is a touch too much. I always use a bit less.

I hope it is your fluid level not your trans. Usually a rev freely then bang into gear situation is due to a worn shift drum, worn shift fork and rounded of edges on the dog rings. Probably caused from excess pressure due to shifting without a clutch. I have seen this before. Maybe just a coincidence that it started when you changed the fluid. Just trying to help. Hope everything is ok.

XB9 sez his uses 28 ounces. Mine likes about that much also. I just use the same stuff I am putting in the swingarm. usually 15W-50 synthetic, whatever brand is on sale. I currently have a few dozen quarts of NAPA brand synthetic to work through, have in past used mobil-1, also worked well.

When you drain the primary/trans, a measureable amount of oil stays trapped in the cases. Anyone that's ever taken a primary cover off can attest to this. If you put 32oz's in, you will overfill the transmission.

I think I remember seeing a graphic here that recommended filling the primary to a lower level than the book indicates. If I recall correctly the suggestion was to fill to 1/32nd over the bottom of the teeth rather than as far up as the book shows. What would the effect of this be?

Use the Formula + It was DESIGNED for your primary. The Syn 3 will work but the + is lightyears better!

Oh, about 28oz is what mine will take. 04 12R
