As a result of my infrequent traveling and thanks to Homeland Security, I had to lose my Swiss Army knife on Sunday before getting on a plane. While the Swiss Army knife has been dang useful for the last 10 or so years, I figure it's time to get a nice multi-tool, and was wondering what my fellow BadWebbers have and like. Any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations appreciated. I'd prefer something not TOO immense. Dang, come to think of it, it's a pity Erik hasn't designed one.... |

I carry an old Gerber compact multi-tool that my high school girlfriend bought me. It comes in handy constantly here at the shipyard. I've had it for nearly 10yrs now and it's held up really well. I also wear it when I ride cause, well... you never know. My friend in the Airforce was actually issued a Gerber Multi-Tool. His was matte black with some unique features like blasting cap crimpers and a C4 Spike. |

Not_purple_s2: That's coincidental as hell; I was flying to Mobile on Sunday when I had to lose my knife! Thanks for the suggestions. |

I have the Swiss Army knife from hell, it has a Pen in it even. I tried all different knives and multi-tools and ended up with the old Swiss Army knife from hell. It's just too comfortable and I swear I could build a civilization with that thing. |

The best part of the multi-tool, which I don't think you can get in a swiss army knife, is the pliers. Those things are life savers. They may eat the hell out of a nut but they'll get the job done. |

Can you carry your knife in checked baggage? I am lucky enough to use a private aircraft for business these days, but plan to take a vacation when I finish my MBA next year. What's the latest on what you guys are experiencing in the commercial airports? |

the leather"man" is a great tool. if anything happens to it, you send it in and if they can't fix it they'll send you a new one. they have a great assortment of different types and they weren't designed by a baby food company. no offense. |

Gerber, the Official Knife of Chucky Seriously though, Gerber makes some really really fine knives and multi-tools. |

I've been using a Leatherman tool since the '80s. I once changed the radiator in a Ford pickup truck using only it and a 4" crescent wrench that I keep on my key ring. Leatherman's customer service is as good as Buell's is. |

TX05xB12s - I just flew to Baltimore Monday with my tool box with one of my favourite tools in it, a 13" Ontario Steel knife. Like this one and din't have any trouble. They did open my tool box though, so don't lock your luggage. They'll just cut the lock.

For everyday use, I carry a Leatherman Squirt. I like the design, but I find Leatherman's quality to be very spotty. (I had to return three of them before I found one without major defects.) When I know I'm going to be tinkering, I carry a Victorinox SwissTool Spirit. It's heavier than a Leatherman, but much higher quality, in my opinion. |

Can you carry your knife in checked baggage? Tx05xb12s, Yes, you can carry a knife in checked baggage. I forgot completely about having a knife in my pocket until I was half-way through a line of ~100 people going through the security check so I didn't have time to do anything with it without missing my flight. I only had carry on bags, so that wouldn't have helped me. I did have this happen once before (fortunately with a little extra time before my flight) and I found out I could go to the airport info desk and mail the knife back to my home address. No time to do that this trip. |

neverenuf: I use the bike as my P*n*s Extension, don't need to show it with my knife (just kidding, I have a leather man and a gerber as well, but being around computers all day and working in a datacenter the cybertool is just way handier). |

http://knifecenter.com/ carries dozens of multitools, and has cross-brand comparison charts. Great prices and service, too. I've got a bunch of different ones depending on if it's on the Buell, backpack, car, et cetera. |

The Leatherman Wave model is hands down the best that I have found. It is an outstanding tool with amazing quality. I highly recommend it. |

I carry this with me all the time. A little pricey, but I love having the replaceable carbide wire cutters, and the replaceable RemGrit (cuts anything) blade. Love the Gerber. Sam |

I just carry a Gerber, or a Buck that opens one handed. Opening a knife one handed is important in my line of work. I used to carry an Emerson CQC7 copy. Still have it, just too tough to replace should something happen. Hey Not, Did you get anything left at your work station a week or two ago ?? |

I just realized that, as of a couple weeks ago, i actually carry, as my daily, a Victorinox "80000" series genuine issue knife, a model which hasn't been available, retail, for nearly two decades. Red, Checkered Phenolic handle, same as the German Army issue Victorinox, and the Mauser Victorinox. I wasopening a bag of potting soil a moment ago and realized this- I keep my modern "Adventurer" in my rucksack... And I keep the army-issue Victorinox in my pocket, not on my belt. If anyone else has one of these 8000 series genuine Citizen-soldier issue knives, hold onto it- I realized, this past Winter, in Zurich, that they've recently become very valuable. |

I picked it up instantly, a couple weeks ago, from a collector-friend, as I lost my own many years ago in The Alps. This one has a blade that's been over-sharpened, etc., but it was $15- in used/poor condition, and it's rare and utilitarian as all get-out. (Message edited by tramp on April 21, 2007) |

I have the original Gerber multi-tool. The best part is that I still get free replacements when something breaks. For daily use, all I carry is this little utili-key. People always want to know where to get one. It'll only handle light duty work, but is better than having a big appendage hanging off the belt...and still better than nothing. Speaking of which, I also carry one of these daily for the same reason:
