Can one arc weld on a bike if "one" disconnects the battery and makes all other safety,ignition issues irrelevant?I guess this falls under the heading of dumb questions.Low amp,quick weld of fairing spider. |

remove the battery and cover anything you don't want weld splatter on with foil. |

"Fairing Spider??" You're talking MAGNESIUM!!??? (on the XB9-R and 12-R fairing and instrument mount) ...or did I mis-understand just which part you're asking about. You don't want to learn welding on magnesium! |

some folks refer to the (steel) fairing subframe on the S2s and S3s as a fairing spider, as well. The former disconnects form the machine, though, while the latter does not. if 'anonymous" posted as him/herself, I'd know more about what model he/she is referring to (trampthinks we're going to see a wave of anonymous postings all-of-a-sudden ) (Message edited by tramp on April 21, 2007) |

It`s me.2k,M2 with s3 fairing-spider bought on ebay-bent it to adjust and previous weld broke. |

You should be fine,as I recall that being a steel part....check first with others to be sure. aare you sure it's not an s2 Spider? the s3 spider, as i recall, was frame-integrated, no? |

I'm mixing up the S2 and 3. the 2 has the slider-bosses for the spider, the 3 is 'neat'. The spider on both are steel, right? (Message edited by tramp on April 21, 2007) |

The main thing to be careful of when welding on a vehicle is not to have your ground path through any bearings (i.e.- wheel bearings or steering bearings). The arc will pit the bearings and races which will soon be toast. Doesn't seem likely that you'd end up doing this welding a fairing spider, but I thought I'd mention it. |

Buellfart A BIG second to Hughlysses point about bearings. Try to ground only through the part to be welded. If the welding arc passes through any bearings on its way to return to ground the arc will pit the ball bearings and races. Wear cotton not synthetic clothing. Weld BB,s roll off cotton. On synthetic they stop, melt, and make you sing and dance. BB's usually aren't to hard to get back out of your skin. Weld spatter is a first cousin to grinding particles neither of which obey the time space continum. Splatter will find that one little quarter inch hole you missed and fly right through it. Shield well, Ground well, and be happy. |
