My LS bike will consist of a Buell driveline in a custom one off chassis. I have been doing quite a bit of research over the last four to five months and have almost everything figured out on how the bike will be built and what it will take to get it to the finished stage. I picked up this donor bike last week for a $1000, it is a 98' Buell S3. It has a blown motor, thus the reason it was so cheap and it has some real bad bubbling on the tank. The motor is going to get rebuilt from top to bottom so I did't mind it being blown. The gas tank and most of the parts will be sold off so this was not a concern of mine either, however the front end, swing arm and wheels will be used in the build. This worked out perfect in my mind as I got a complete bike for 1k instead of paying 4k for a running one when I was going to gut the motor anyways. After the chassis is built the heads will be shipped to NHRS performance for some cnc porting work on their cnc machine with their cnc-flex program. They are also going to help me with custom made pistons that will be made to make the motor approx 82 c.i. (1350cc's) as well as new cyclinders. At this point the stock stroke will remain. NHRS will help with the bulk of the technical aspect of the motor to include most if not all parts. I will build the motor with their input and advice. By the time the motor is finished just about everything will have been worked or replaced, new cams, worked heads, Carillo rods, new pistons and cylinders. My goal is to build it strong enough to be able to eventually put nitrous to the motor. The chassis will be a custom made one-off frame. Randy at MDR is going to help me build the chassis. At this point all of the O.E.M. parts to include the front end, wheels, brakes, controls and swingarm will be used with the new chassis. I still need to go over some different designs with Randy at MDR, however I pretty much know what I want and with his input will come up with the final design. To say the least the chassis will be long and low with a wheelbase inbetweeb 70-72". The bodywork will be from Airtech. I have spoke with Airtech, Randy at MDR is good friends with them so I should be able to work something out with them as they are local. I feel with my hardwork and the input of some very knowledgeable people locally in my town, my ultimate goal of 200 MPH on nitrous and partially-streamlined will be achieved in the years to come. Updates to follow as I learn more. Scott |

Good luck Scott I'm thinking about doing the same thing, but with an 86 Sportster I have that was my drag bike. My bike has Carillo rods in it now I haven't had any problems but I have heard some people say that S&S Supreme Rods were better. Does anyone know if this is true? I know the guys that balanced the lower end were sure complaining. |

Best of luck, and I for one will be looking forward to progress reports as things move on. What is your goal date for a first run. Man that tank sure is blistered! Nice find though. |

I bought the rods from an engine builder in Wisconsin, that was in 1993. I paid $500 because he ordered the wrong rods stock length rods only fit stock stroke motors. I wish I could tell you where to find a deal. That brings up another point are stock length rods too short for optimum stroke length to stroke ratio. Since your not constricted by overall cylinder hight like I was by using a stock Sportster frame, you could use any length you want. |

Glitch, My absolute latest I want to be done is September as that is when the BUB meet is, however I am thinking more along the lines of July that way I can get a test pass in at El Mirage. The tank is going to get sandblasted and sold. Champ, I will be running in the 1350 cc class this year. I can run 1350 with a stock stroke so, maybe next year I will move up as money allows. I would like to run a longer stroke in the S&S cases, however from what I have been told that is pretty pricey. Scott |

No real big update as it has been a busy weekend with the holiday. Since the last pictures I have sandblasted the head and it looks alot better than I originally thought. There is a broken valve guide and one of the valves is bent, however all of this will be re-built by Dan and the crew at NHRS. I am hoping to have the bike apart next week so I can get going on the chassis. There is alot of up and down play in the front rod, I am hoping the play is in the rod itself and not the crank. Scott

If you are interested, I have a +12 steel swingarm that would get you into the wheelbase you are looking for. It is very well done with brace that goes around the shock mount. $450+shipping. Good luck! I am building a A-PG 1650 bike for Maxton and Bonnivelle this year. baileyj76@hotmail.com Jeff |

Thanks Jeff, at this time I am going to pass as I am going to make everything that I can that way I can spend more money on motor/trans ect ect. Good luck at Maxton! What speed are you shooting for at Bonneville?? Did you buy new cases for your bike? Scott |

Scott,I was eyeballing that bike on eBay.Looks like fun.Did you get yourself a rulebook(s) and which event are you planning on,Speedweek,WOS, Bub's,or World Finals.SCTA rulebook for all except Bub's,for them you need AMA rules. Bonneville bike records are here http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/records/BNIrecs _bikes.htm Another good resource is www.landracing.com Just curious as to why you are going to change the frame as the Buell frame has worked well for myself and Aaron Wilson. |

Fireman, thanks for the info and the links! I have been to both sites prior to finding this site as well as Bubs site. I don't have a hard copy of the rulebook(s) yet as I believe the 07' has not been printed yet, I am not sure. For now I am going to try and and get the bike done by mid-summer so I can do some trial runs at El Mirage so I can get the bike dialed in so I can attend the Bub meet on September 2nd through the 6th. The reason I am going to build a custom frame is because I feel that with a custom chassis I can really tailor the bike to be ran as a land speed bike and dictate the shape of the bike and decrease the frontal area significantly. Thats the plan at least that I have come up with to this point based on my research and from speaking with fellow land speed racers. Besides it is a lot of fun to build to build things! So Fireman please tell me a little bit about yourself and your Buell racing history? I would love to hear any input you may have. Scott Here is a pic of my last build.

Spent some time today pulling the motor. Friday will be the start of drawing up the plans to build the chassis and hopefully start building the following week. Here is how I got the motor out of the existing frame. Notice the size of the piston on the left and what is left of the one on the right.......... My stopping point for the day The pile of for sale parts is building.

I pretty much finished up with the disassembly of the Buell this evening with the exception of the swingarm. I will remove the swingarm this weekend as well as the cams from the motor I scored last weekend. The cams and the heads are off to NRHS first thing Monday for the headwork and I believe the cams are going to Redline as a core in exchange for the new cams. Hoping to finish the chassis design this week, we will see.

Not certain (unless you plan to go supersonic) why you'd decrease the frontal area. Have you done the calcs? Note that the "huge" Buell RR fairing is one of the most aerodynamic vehicles. The XBRR is also quite excellent. There was much research done (some of it pretty funny) to learn how much the frontal area had to be INCREASED to achieve the best aerodynamics. There used to be a great article buried on the USFRA website. |

Court, If you have a link I would love to read the info you are speaking about. My bike is not a RR or a XBRR. I have not decided what shape my fairing will be yet as I have not met with Kent from Airtek yet. When I speak of decreasing the frontal area of the bike I am not speaking of just the fairing alone, I am speaking of the whole footprint the rider/bike make as a whole. I do not want to sit on the bike I want to sit in it as much as possible. The chassis will be built with trying to reduce the square footage of the footprint that the rider/bike make together as a whole. I hope I answered your question, I am new land racing and am learning everyday, however I do have quite a few experienced land racers assisting me with technical info for my build. As the RR bodywork is very rare I would ask Kent about some Charlie Toy bodywork, there are some fast guys using it.Let me know what he says as I am in need of some slippery stuff for my kid's bike. |

Today I pulled the cams out of both motors, I wanted to see the difference in the lobes from the stock Sportster vs the Buell and the stock sportster cams are off to NRHS to be sent to Redshift for there make over into the 643's. My heads are going to NRHS for a make over as well. I also finished completely with the disassembly of the donor bike. If I have time tomorrow I will try and tear down the motor completely and split the cases so I can access what other damage may of happen and also to have a motor to use during the fabrication of the frame. If anyone is in need of parts let me know as I will sell them on the forums I visit first and then move on to ebay and craigslist. Just about everything will be for sell with the exception of the the wheels, frontend, and motor. I may sell the frame later after I am done building. If you need a part just ask I may have it........ Scott The cam on the left is the stock sportster and on the right the Buell.

I spent some time after work last night on the motor. I was able to get the cases split and see if there was any damage to the cases. At this point I believe the cases are fine and that the rods are definatley screwed and I am not sure about the crank. I will press the crank out of the case this weekend to check and see what kind of shape it is in. No worries on the crank or the rods as I am buying a set of Carrillo rods and I have another crank in another motor I can use. Heads are currently at NRHS and should be back in about three weeks, pistons and cylinders are on order and the cams are being sent to Redshift via NHRS. Scott Tranny internals look good I think it is save to say that the piston is slightly chewed up!

Got the crank pressed out tonight and the failure is pretty obvious from the pictures........... When did they start make rods with ovals?? I think the crank pin got a little warm......

My Dyna (2ki) ignition came in yesterday and I am still waiting on a bunch of parts for the motor to arrive. Most parts are being custom made so I am still weeks out on a lot of the parts. Ordered my rods today from Carrillo to the tune of $712 shipped to my door. They will be here tomorrow at which point I can order my crank pin and bearings. I also decided that this year I am going to hold off on building a ground up chassis. Instead I have ordered a frame from Paughco after some good advice from a well known local land speed racer. The frame will be modded as necessary. Going this route will allow me to race this year in July at El Mirage prior to going to the Bub meet in September. Also have been selling lots of parts off of the donor parts. if you need a part please ask I may want to sell. Scott
