the leak CAN get worse gradually -- on the other hand, the wear can accelerate rapidly -- it's kinda hard to predict if it was me, I'd start researching/lining up/saving for a replacement right about now deals exists on aftermarket shocks, and there are tales of a few places that will rebuild stockers . . . . your call me, I went after market for two reasons -- first, the aftermarket shocks offer the opportunity to fit different springs to suit your wieght, as well as a greater range of adjustability reason the second -- ease of rebuilding -- the Showa, though it CAN be rebuild, isn't really designed to be -- it's a bit of a PITA, from what I know not much help in predicting the rate of failure, I know, but you KNOW it ain't gonna heal itself ;-} |

"...if it was me, I'd start researching/lining up/saving for a replacement right about now..." You'll be glad you did. Even if the Showa is rebuilt, you'll just have a crappy rebuilt POS shock. If you get a line on a used Penske, first thing you need to ask is what weight rider it was built for. Each one is custom built for the application when you buy them new. I got a used one that was built for a 185lb rider and the performance is incredible. I rode someone elses bike with a Penske that was built for a 150lb rider and I could actually feel the difference at speed (needed more damping). From what I understand, they are easily re-valved if the adjustments aren't in your range; it's the nitrogen recharge that's the issue. |

My factory one leaked all the fluid out in one day of riding shortly after I got the bike (with 15k miles on it). I replaced it with another used factory shock, and it leaked all it's fluid out in one day about a week after I put it on. Now I have a WP shock and couldn't be happier! I rode for a few weeks on my factory ones with no fluid. It shouldn't stop you, it'll just leave you bouncing all over the place, so don't go tearing into any corners. |

I basically blew up my shock after about 15,000 miles. I rebuilt another blown shock that a member here donated with Race Tech seals and bushing and had a local shop recharge it. It's been better than new (re-valved it, too), and has been fine with another 10,000 miles on it. |
