So I have an update from my crash. As some of you know, I lowsided a few weeks ago and long story short; they are totalling the bike. So the purpose of this thread is two fold. First, The new bike I have my eye on is a 2006 XB12SS (long) and was wondering what people thought of the long versions. Secondly, Since the bike is RED and therefore not my optimal color, would anyone be interested in trading plastics? I would buy this bike then send off the red windscreen, front fender, chin spoiler, and airbox cover to someone who would (in a perfect world) send me back their Black plastics. Hehe... I know this is a long shot. I can post pics of the Red Lightning to peak interest. Also, if anyone is looking for a 2005 XB12S track bike they might want to call up ARGO Cycles in Hooksett, NH in the next few weeks. I believe that is where my former bike is headed. /cry |

I am a big fan of the Longs. I think that they are a little bit more stable, more comfortable, and better on rough roads. Curiously enough, even though they are longer than stock, they have less "knee room" for long legged riders. I was trying to keep up with Ray at MB 4 who was riding one. He had "road" instead of sport tires, and he was going very fast and smoothly. I think the Long should be the Standard Model. |

I have the long and it's great. I ended up buying the sunset Orange (I didn't think they made red in 06). I ended up doing just what you are asking for. I bought Black plastics and sold my Sunset Orange set. If you can't find someone to trade with, you can always buy a used set of black plastics and then just sell yours and hope to come out close to even. |

Sorry to here they totaled it. Kinda figured they would with the frame tore up. Remember Frame pucks before you leave the dealer. |

I would highly suggest that you ride the SS back to back with an S. I owned an SS, and had an accident that totaled it out. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/681 7/217951.html?1154629172 Anyways I test rode a S back to back with a SS after the accident, and I prefer the S. The only thing I miss about the SS is the extra fuel. I prefer the way the S handles in the corners (what limited ones we have in SE Michigan). Like I said really try to set up a back to back test ride. I hope you had GAP insurance, and don't end up upside down on your payments (like me) |

Didn't have gap insurance. But didn't end up upside down either. Looks like I will be slightly ahead of the game. They should be giving me around $7600.00 for my bike, and I owe around $6500.00 Anyway, I will take your advice Hardcorps. The other option at Meredith is an '06 XB12S in Cherry Bomb Translucid. Would anyone be interested in swapping their Black plastics for the Cherry Bomb ones? |

Would anyone be interested in swapping their Black plastics for the Cherry Bomb ones? If you can't find a trade, why not paint the cherry bomb plastics from the inside? It'll look like a really deep candy red/black. XBullet painted his kick ash black from the inside, and I must say it looks extra nice. Looks like the paint is a foot deep. A really nice effect. Congrats on the insurance coverage, it's not often I hear of good outcomes. |

Hopefully this time you'll get the gap! You got lucky that you don't owe money. IMO it's plain stupid not to take gap insurance. It's cheap insurance, literally, against accidents which are bound to happen to some new owners. You don't know if you'll be one of these unfortunate ones or not. It's sort of like the people who rent trucks from my mom's work. They don't pay the extra $10 or so for the insurance and then they cry and complain when they total the trucks. DUH! Anyway, it just seems you can't find a bike in the color you like, doesn't it? I'm just glad you're getting another bike. |

Yeah GAP insurance will most likely be bought this time...Plus they give you $1000 bucks towards a new bike. Anyway, I like the idea of painting the inside of that cherry bomb plastic. I have some flat black that just might do the trick. |

And yeah, if the only thing I am worried about is getting a new bike with the right color scheme than I think things have worked out pretty nicely. This time next week I should be puttering along at 55mph, desperately waiting for that 1000 mile on the odometer to click over... |

Read your manual this time. It's much less than 1000 miles. I know you'd be very interested in swapping your plastics for the famous '03 SpongeBob yellow plastics. PM Me. I won't charge you much extra at all! |

I did read my manual last time and will read it again this time. Sorry if I forgot the exact number I guess I was just too distracted thinking about riding. (Message edited by ghalsey on April 09, 2007) |

Good news! Buell has revised their wear-in guidelines for the XBs as follows:
To allow your engine to wear in its critical parts, we recommend that you observe the riding rules provided below for the first 500 miles (800 kilometers). Adhering to these suggestions will help to assure good future durability and performance.
1. During the first 50 miles (80 kilometers) of riding, keep the engine speed below 4000 RPM in any gear. Do not lug the engine by running or accelerating at very low RPM, or by running at high RPM longer than needed for shifting or passing. 2. Up to 500 miles (800 kilometers), vary the engine speed and avoid operating at any steady engine speed for long periods. Engine speed up to 5000 RPM in any gear is permissible. 3. Drive slowly and avoid fast starts at wide open throttle until the engine has warmed up. 4. Avoid lugging the engine by not running the engine at very low speeds in higher gears. 5. Avoid hard braking. New brakes need to be broken-in by moderate use for the first 200 miles (300 kilometers). FYI: 4000 rpm and 5000 rpm in 5th gear on an XB12 equate to approximately 80 mph and 100 mph, respectively. Enjoy! |

THAT would have made my 500 mile trip home from the dealer a little more enjoyable!!!! My first 50 miles was limited to like 45 miles an hour or something silly like that, I stayed on the access road till it ran out!! |

Break in on the 2007's is painless. Pulling 90mph and still being within the guidlines puts a helluva grin on ones face. I still got mine! |
