Opinions on one vs. the other for use in the engine and primary. Currently Syn3 in both. |

I have used both in the primary and engine. I can't tell any real differences at all. I did miss a couple of shifts with the Syn3 but I think it was me. (Message edited by kmfw160 on May 06, 2007) |

when I had my sportster I used syn 3 and reg oil back and forth a couple times (cause the bike was new dont try when over 5000 miles!) because I work at a dealership for harleys its kinda easy to get oil. Syn-3 in the chaincase will make a normal big-twin harleys and sportsters (trans and primary in sportys) lose a lil bit of grab in the clutch. My new buell xb seems to have the same trait (prolly cause of the sportster primary setup). I use normal half synthetic (your choice) in the primary (again, primary AND transmission on buells and sportys out there) and synthetic in the motor oil. I find on a buell it makes lots more valvetrain chatter with syn-3 but seems to run a lil more free in the rpm's. The only downside to regular fossil oil is heat my friend! Synthetic will let go of heat quicker when the bike is turned off and wont break down the oil as much on hot days. If you dont mind a lil extra heat and checking your oil everytime you gas up in the summer save the money and use reg oil. Syn-3 is best used from the start of the bikes life (er... or any snythetic not just syn-3 mobil-1 is awesome). Like I said before it wont break down in the heat if you live in places were it gets over 90 degrees F. You wont see any oil loss from oil change to oil change and no longer have to "Top Off" the oil bag. It doesnt have the same noise dampening qualities like normal oil thats for comfort, so you might think your motor seems like its running a little bit "loose". :-/ |

Just bought a 2002 M2 with 4800 miles. Like the idea of heat transfer with synthetics. Guessing previous owner used regular oil in both engine and primary.With this many miles on the bike should I stick with fossil or can I change over to synthetics if I stick with them from here on out on both primary and engine? Clutchless posted he used "half synthetic" in his primary. Is he talking about mixing regular and synthetic or is this a store bought product? Thanks for your help. |

Change to synthetic motor oil at ANY time. Can be used in both the engine and tranny. Just make sure you use the correct vis. and API rating. Brand isn't that big of a deal. I like Mobil 1 cause it's available at my local stores. Others use Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline or Syn3. They're all good... |

My 2000 saw nothing but full synthetic everywhere from 5000 miles to 27,000 plus miles. |

I've been using Mobile 1 15W50 in my primary (crankcase too)since early on in the life of the '99 S3. Even at 63,000mi. I've hardly ever had to adjust my primary tensioner. |
