And don't say, "All of 'em!" We all know that ain't happening. I'm trying to get my dealership to have all regular wear/maintenance parts as well as common replacement parts in case of a "tipover". We have quite a bit already and I have some ideas, but I wanted to get outside input (inside output?) from y'all. This is a sincere effort, so please give sincere answers (boy, I'm asking for it now ), with part numbers if you got 'em. Court had earlier posted something about a list for the dealers that used to exist. I wonder if it is still around. Thanks in advance, HBJ Jay Howze Central Texas H-D/Buell Austin, Texas |

My list applies to a Cyclone, but many parts fit all tubers. Some part numbers may have been updated. Things like oil filers and drain plug gaskets should be common, and I don't mind buying those in bulk to have on hand, as they'll get used eventually. clutch cable 38656-00YA speedometer sensor 74431-01B Gaskets, seals, and other re-assembly parts would be nice to have available. Some you can plan ahead for, but others fail. intake manifold seal 26995-86B primary cover gasket 34955-89A primary chain adjuster 39975-90A rocker cover gasket kit 17036-91 Nuts and bolts, especially those with mandatory replacement (e.g. rotor bolts) should be stocked. Many people get a lot of maintenance parts from the aftermarket, and don't care if the dealer has brake pads on the shelf. This is just a start, of course! |

At least 1 drive belt isn't too much to ask. If you sell it, order another one. The likely hood of multiple down tubers at the same time is pretty small, so one is probably enough. I second the common gaskets, and the clutch cable, and would add the front isolator, and hardware. And what about the charging system? Isn't there a part that likes to die - the voltage regulator maybe? Whichever it is, that should be in stock too. Other than that - take a look your previous service logs. Anything you've ever ordered two or three times- you should think about (especially cheap stuff like nuts and bolts.) And keep in mind, tuber owners really only expect "in stock" to mean you have ONE. If some guy came in and bought whatever we need yesterday - we consider that totally cool for the most part. |

Dont for get both the clutch and F.brake levers, a set of bars for each model, and some R.Brake and shifter levers. These are all pretty cheap compared to other items dealers carry and all are usually damaged from the lightest drop. There is nothing worse than haveing to wait for a brake lever on order!! I will add to the already listed, simple hardware ... nuts and bolts ... and bearings ... wheel and steering head.. and now that I think of it .. throttle cables.. I actually had to wait for about a week for fork pinch bolts, caliper mounting bolts, air cleaner mounting bolts .. and at one time .. exhaust stud nuts.... Hardware takes up little to no room .. no reason not to have that kind of stuff on hand. The problem is - Dealer's don't like to stock much of anything specifically for Buell's - I know of one specific dealership that thinks Buell owner's are one time type buyers .. which is bad thinking - hate to use movie quotes - but "If you stock it they will come !" Dealerships WILL get more parts sales if they stocked more items. |

dealership that thinks Buell owner's are one time type buyers Funny, ever since I bought my Buell, I think of Harley Davidson dealerships as never-ever type dealerships... I wonder if there is a correlation there. |

I think making a list would be helpful. The only thing I see is that a lot of the things listed are parts Buells share with HD bikes. I would think if the dealer didn't have those parts in stock, they have more issues than just keeping Buell parts in stock. |

Phatkid - you are absolutely correct, many parts are shared with HD bikes .. .. I tried to get parts again today from an un-named dealership and had no luck ... out of how many different Buell's made, only a total of one throttle cable with a Buell name on it did they have .. one, period ... no exhaust stud nuts, no Screamin' Eagle exhaust gaskets, no indicator lamps, and no banjo breather fittings - well - they had half, the part the breather hose attaches to, but not the banjo bolt itself. And the sad thing is - only the throttle cables were 'Buell' specific parts. I don't see any reason why any of the above mentioned parts wouldn't be in stock. The parts guy himself couldn't believe it. Needless to say, another disappointing dealership experience. Which is not a good thing, my feelings on any dealership, be it for cycles or cars ... is already not a good one ... experiences like this are why I am liking the internet more and more ... hell if I have to wait, might as well buy it cheaper on line in most cases - will take just as long to get ordering from a dealership. |

I generally have everything mentioned so far (with the exception of some fasteners) in stock at most times. Which is not to say that they don't go out of stock on occasion. If I have three levers on the shelf, and I get three orders in a day for that same lever, well, the fourth guy has to wait a week or so. But generally, its in stock. Why most of the dealers don't is beyond me, all it takes is someone in parts that knows the bikes a little and cares. Good for you, Jay. Al (Message edited by al_lighton on April 03, 2007) |

us s2 guys are kinda lucky here.. if you have the parts book.. most of the parts on a s2 are harley sportster or big twin parts.. if you know the number most harley shops stock what you want.. if you dont know the part # then they will swear up and down that they dont have the parts.. because its a buell not a harley.. |

Many of the gasket kits (especially tuber stuff) are XL-spec so those are typically stocked anyway. We try to keep in stock: tires belts cables turn signals mirrors fluids/filters bearings (wheel/steering) top end gasket kits at least one of all recall kits; more if recently re-issued (i.e. the X1 throttle cable recall reissue from this spring) pegs shifters brake pedals hand levers frame pucks (XB) shop manuals One tip for those buying parts: if the part has a translation to a HD part, typically HD parts ship/arrive more quickly than Buell parts. Unless you want a blue oval on the box, it's usually faster to order the corresponding HD part or kit. |

"if you dont know the part # then they will swear"(Aomy) I've had mixed results at my local HD, from my very few visits so far, one guy seems interested and knows Buells, another is kind of lost, but tries hard to help, a couple seem irritated to have to walk around the counter to that "other" book. It must have been one of them who answered the phone when I called and asked for a fork seal for an 04 Blast-gave him the part number, thought I was being helpful, he said "thats not a Harley number" well...gee..got over that hump, didn't have it anyway-maybe we need a crossover chart for #'s, so they wouldn't know what you wanted parts for. UPS was at my door the next day with my seal and some other things from Stone Mtn Rotzaruck!! |

If you call your HD dealer, they/we have this neat-o little program built into Talon II (the dealer software). It's under the "other functions" menu and it's called EPC, or Electronic Parts Catalog. No book required (although you do have to click "Change OEM" as it comes up HD at startup)! I use it all the time at my <sales> desk when I have a Bueller come in and needs a part - it's faster for me to type and click than it is to walk back to the parts dept. Usually I'll hand 'em a post-it with PN and bin location, and *then* send 'em back to the parts dept |

The problem I ran into was blowing rocker box gaskets like clockwork every 3500 miles (yes I do let the bike warm up before riding, usually while I gather my stuff out of the garage and get it on. Usually average approx. five minutes, there's a point here) Harley only stocks the paper gaskets, I don't know if they can stock other brands because they are not HD but I WILL NOT buy more paper gaskets. I went to American Thunder and asked if they carried any Cometic, they did, and seemed more than put out just for me asking. I was rudely told they had nothing for a Buell and I said well how about a 1200 sporty; yeah we got that. HELLO? How amazing! It worked, a 1200 sporty gasket kit actually worked, who woulda thunk it. The guy there told me I was blowing them so often because I didn't let it warm up but you can't win an argument with a fool; ever, don't even try. I did them myself this time with not so much as a trickle and that was 8k miles ago. The short point of this long story is can you stock a better quality gasket. I would gladly buy from the dealership if I could get a quality gasket and someone who knows what they're talking about. Sorry I don't have a part number |

My nephew owns a Big 4 Japanese dealership. He says over the last few years the dealer trend is to minimize hard parts. He told me he has maybe 800 different parts stocked for Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki (including 4 wheelers). This frees up space and capital to stock tires, performance, apparel, and bling items which are mostly impulse purchases. If you NEED a part they "have it in our warehouse" and can usually get it to you in two to three business days. When you go to a HD/Buell dealer what do you see? THANKS - Stan |

Most machines that require maintenance will list a set of components to have on hand to fix them, This comes from my old factory days working on automation and other machines. The dealer absolutely should have a list that came from the factory about what to absolutely have in stock at all times. |

If you NEED a part they "have it in our warehouse" and can usually get it to you in two to three business days. my local dealer, you mean a week or more, The few sponsor dealers I have dealt with here with almost no exceptions get it in a week or less, SMHD actualy found a part I wanted and got me hooked up evern though they did not get the sale. the thing that galls me is my local botique has WHEELS on the shelf for the HD, tons of bling but no brake pads 2 out of 2 times and 2 weeks to get pad retaining pins. to the dealers that Get it with Buell Thanks.. |

here's a good tip, buy your hardware elsewhere! with the interweb it's fairly easy to find out the thread/diameter/length for just about any fastener out there if you don't have one to compare. Mcmaster/Carr ships overnite and is far cheaper... |
