Clearly the older tube framed Buells like my X1 have a Harley XL derived sporster engine. I can't figure out which Harley engine the new XBs came from. What is that engine? Did Buell change the design so much that it has become their own thing? I don't know. |

Nope, the base motor is still a Sportster 1200. It just has redesigned primary and cam cases, better heads and bigger cams, more compression, etc. |

There's a lot more to it than the primary and cam cases . The Sportster switched to a "Buell" engine in ?05?. There are a number of new technologies in the new Buell engine that weren't there before Buell had HD redesign the Sportster engine to their specs. The fact that Buell had it engineered to their specs is why I figure it's a "Buell" engine as such. There are beehive springs, oil squirters, a very trick oiling system, and a very different EFI system. Are the sportsters rollered? |

Many, many differences. It's definitely not a Sportster engine with cam cases!!! It was an all new engine for Buell, and then later the Sportster picked up on some of the components. The XB came out in 2003; look at parts books between Sportsters and XB's from 2003. There is almost nothing the same!!! |

Will the heads fit on a pre 05 sportster, will the cams fit, lifters, cylinders, crank, pistons, clutch, lifters ?If they fit, doesn't matter if they have different part numbers or not that would tell me that they are closely related, moreso than many here will admit. |

My first ex-wife wore the same size ring as my second ex-wife. Both had brown hair too. Nose located approximately mid-face. |

Call me ignorant, but where do the 9's derive from? Sleeved down 1200s? |

The 9 is just a shorter stroke 1200 IIRC. Or more appropriately, the 1200 is a longer stroke 9, since the 9 came first. And it would make sense to me (correct me if I'm wrong) the 9 is just a bigger bore (or longer stroke) 883 sportster engine. Sam |

The XB came out in 2003; look at parts books between Sportsters and XB's from 2003. There is almost nothing the same!!! The internals on the engines are nearly identical aside from pistons and cams. The Buell and Sportster engines have a lot more in common than you think. BTW - a 2003 Sportster was still on the older design. You'd be better served to compare it to a 2004. |

I know for a fact the heads will bolt right up, although there is more fin area on the new heads (2004 and newer Sportsters), so your old cylinders will look smaller. Buell cams don't fit because they they did something funky/backwards with something in there, but the XB grind is the same as an SE grind you can buy for the sportsters. The crank and cyliders (and probably lifters) are the same in a 2004 and later Sportster 1200 as they are in an XB12. The pistons are different (10.0:1 vs. 9.7:1 compression), and the clutch may be different, but liekly interchangeable. |

The 9 has a bore of 3.5", stroke is 3.125". The 12 has the same bore, with a 3.813" stroke, just like the Sportster 1200. The 883 has a 3" bore, with a 3.813" stroke, same as the ironhead 900's. |

I passed a Sportster on my 'Bolt on my way to work. I didn't see any differences as I went by. Must have been one of the new Sportsters. . . |

I believe I remember readin in a magazine article that the crank is almost 7lbs lighter then the sportster crank. Buell used to use a lighter flywheel assembly than the Sportsters, but since 2004 the XL1200 has the lightened version as well. |

As much a Buell supporter as I am, I cant understand why the Sportster engine feels more "in place" and relaible. (eg. no pinging in extreme heat, no hard knocking after excellerating from a dead stop. Empirically speaking about the 06 12R and the 06 Sportster, the Sportsters power plant just seems more intact. Not necessarily attacking the quoted comment just finding the reasoning as to why it is a "upgraded" engine? Numbers may be higher (I really dont know) but at times, mechanically speaking Buells engine doesnt sound well, sound.} |
