At what point in the '06 Uly production year did they switch to the "Kirk Douglas" chin fairing? My bike was Aug. '05 mfg.date and has the smooth chin. The front tire contacts it when coming down from a big wheelie. Its has since new, leaving a nice skid mark on the gray portion. I want to paint it flat black, but I know it while rub off. Anyone else with early models switch to the new chin piece? If I paint it black, I would like to do the silver portions of the sidebags too. Tim |

I didn't know there were different pieces, as my was rubbing since stock. I did come up with a fix tho: Remove your plastics. Loosen all straps and the one clamp on the muffler till you can feel your can move the muffler a little bit by shaking it. Use a wood 2x4 about 3 ft long and place it between the back of the front tire, and the front of the muffler. A slight push on the 2x4 will move the muffler back about 1/4". While holding in that position, tighten a rear strap to hold it in place. Torque all hardware to specs, touch up paint, no more skidmarks. |

I'm not certain, but I do think there was a change from a rounded front chin to one with a depression in the center because of the rubbing. It seems like I have a rounded front (dec'06 build), but no rubbing on it. Maybe Treadmarks is on to something with the exhaust repositioning and it was more of a matter of proper exhaust installation. (Message edited by jmhinkle on March 26, 2007) |

I have no direct contact skid marks, but can anyone tell me what the hell this stuff is?
It's the consistency of axle grease. I was able to clean it off. There was also some of this mystery black splooge on the rear side of the front fender. What is it? |

I also had skid marks on mine. I changed it to the black chin spoiler they make for the TT. easy to change just drill out the 4 rivets and swap out spoilers. I ordered 4 new replacement washers with the rivets. If I remember the spoiler was under $35.and yes the new one has a bigger depression (had to move the muffler clamp a bit) |

Fatty, That's fifth wheel grease. Sometimes they get so overloaded and never cleaned that they drop big heaps of it on the road. I've picked it up on almost every vehicle I have owned. My Dad works at a company that runs a few semi's and he does the maintenance on them. He explained to me how they should be cleaned and grease regularly, but most places just pour the grease to them and let it drop off on the road. Haven't you ever strung the same stuff up the side of your car from a tire after a long highway trip? It's nasty stuff for sure. |

Thanks Joel. That would make sense. I've just never seen it. We didn't ride much slab, but I guess it only takes one puddle to do this. I was just hoping that it didn't originate from the bike itself. I couldn't imagine where it might have come from. |

Ft_bstrd: I'm concerned that you have to make a mental note to not borrow sean's pants. |

You never know when you're gonna get caught in the UK without your pants. Let's say I come directly from the Highlander Games and can't find my luggage. I ain't gonna wear that kilt all day long. I just ain't gonna borrow Sean's pants. |

Levi's aren't even made in America anymore because of WalMart. Here's the article. The part about Levi Strauss is pretty far into the article. http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.htm l |

Wow...that's sad. Of course, the Wal-Mart way is what this country is based on. Free market. People who want junk can buy at Wal-Mart. People who want quality can pay a little extra for it elsewhere. I don't need a gallon of pickles, and I'd pay $3 for a smaller jar just so I didn't have to haul 12lbs of pickles home and have it taking up space in my fridge. But that's just me. |

Buells are no longer made in America. Just assembled there. Levi are still a quality product. I have the data. Rocket |
