Hello, not knowing the inner workings of an engine, I was just wondering if one of the engines was stronger in a durability sense. Does one work harder than another, making it more prone to wear? The xb platform was designed around the 9(I think)does that come into play at all? Historically are there more problems with the 12 or 9. thanks |

I here tell that the 12 can be prone to pinging problems. |

The 12's will suffer from cylinder and piston wear sooner. The average piston speeds are a bit higher than the 9 due to the long stroke, and that combined with shorter rods means they also see higher side loads. Theoretically you'd expect the valve train life to be better in the 12...though there seems to be little difference in actual road use. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. Both have their pros and cons. I'd choose by which power delivery characteristics suit your riding style better. They are quite different animals. One is smooth and linear, the other lumpy and torquey. |

I wouldn't describe the 12 s lumpy at all. That its not. You ride both differently. |

I had the heads off not too long ago and looked at the cyls... they seem pretty good. 40K miles. It's a 2004 12. Looks to be good for another 60K easy. It's starting to pull just a tad bit of oil through the seals though, but that's a reasonably easy fix. |

Thanks, I was just curious as to whether one(in theory) was stronger than another. |

I have owned both the XB9R and XB12R and can tell you for certain that the only failure in approx 12,000 miles was the same failure for each bike.............................................. .................................... The HEADLIGHTS Would that keep me from buying another XB? Not in this lifetime, the TT is looking better every time I see it. I'm thinking M2 + XB = TT. |

The average piston speeds are a bit higher than the 9 due to the long stroke I dunno about that. Sounds like something Al Gore would come up with. The 9 revs higher thus more revolutions per minute so even if the 12's pistons are speeding along faster the 9 is producing more up and down cycles in the same amount of time. Sounds like a wash to me. |
