I'm driving home today, talking to DaveS on the phone. I've kinda, due to some very close calls, by folks on bikes not me, lately, been trying to be a bit more vigilant for bikes. Now bear in mind, I live and drive in a CITY that have more registered vehicles than the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma COMBINED and the city that consumes, for cops and our 12,053 taxis, something like 18% of the Ford Crown Vic output. You can't stuff that many cars into a given area without some weird stuff happening. Bear in mind. . . if you are doing THIS:
I'm probably looking at THIS:
But more likely THIS:
And you could be the victim of THIS:
Right out my window! Please be careful. Court . . . I DO love this city! |

I've seen something on the order of 10 absolutely STUPID motorcycle stunts on the NYC roads the last week. I'm driving along next to this guy and kapow . . . just knocks his butt clean off the bike. Dude jumps up and starts waving his hands yelling "ouch". He was an idiot. That side of the road was effectively empty and he allowed his safety envelope to erode to zero. Nice working between the Ford Modeling Agency and the New York Sports Club adjacent to NYU. |

Actually I do. But, as you know, you can't PLAN the best shots. To date . . the shot most favored by the "boys" was the day I was sitting in the truck, with BLACKED OUT windows, and two gals were standing next, like within 12" of the passenger window, adjusting each others substantial cleavages. They were on the curb and thus elevated to a level where the Nikkor Macro lens was out of view 30" away. I feel . . so. . . so. . . so CHEAPENDED! |

It's that time . . . . Springtime arrived at something like 8:07PM the other night. There was still snow on the ground, but the prospect of temps headed toward the 70's, from the teens, by the end of the week, got everyone who'd ever enjoyed traveling on 2-wheels stoked and ready to start another year of riding. This morning I'm headed to work and as the white Ferris-looking Road King passed me, the rider clad in H.O.G. regalia. . I started thinking I'd go for a ride next weekend. No sooner had the Road King passed me than traffic came to nearly a standstill on the Gowanus/BQE. I crept, crept and crept and eventually reached the point I could see all the flashing lights ahead of me. There in the road, crumpled like a piece of paper was a shiny brand spanking new Dyna-Wide Glide. I have not facts, but sense this was one of someone's first rides of the new riding season. I used to ride a great deal. When I was criss-crossing the country, pretty much 12 months of the year, singing Buell songs to folks who'd never heard the tune, several thousand miles a week was no bigger. It used, and Denise is the only one here who'd recall, to be a joke that when I got on my Buell at midnight, I could turn up about anywhere in the country (Marina del Rey was a frequent destination being an even 23:30 hours from Topeka) the next day. During those years I used to pen an annual "re-sharpening your riding skills" column and I'm thinking about doing it again. Given that my total mileage for the last year hovered somewhere BELOW 100 total miles, I'm thinking about riding some more and may share some of the tips, tricks and secrets acquired over years of spending quality time with the Buells you'd be seeing next year. For now . . . Please, please, please . . understand that riding skills, like guitar playing or beach volleyball, extinguish when not used. Don't make the mistake of taking your "re-entry" inaugural ride in the busiest rush hour in the biggest city on the worst road . . . a legend for road rage. For anyone who'd interested, I'll be looking for a bike in the coming weeks (looks bad for me to be riding a BMW, right?) and will be sharing some of my re-indoctination thoughts. For now . . . please ride safely. Court |

Looking forward to the read, hopefully it will be on your "refreshed" S2, hopefully with pics. Along the lines of your thoughts I'm in the slow process of reading through The Art of Urban Cycling in order to, as some say, re-wrap my mind around the riding. The SpringTime refreshing, reminding, remembering, and re-realizing all the little things that soon become innate and secondary once we're back in focus and back in tune. Got a buck in change in my pocket, plan to keep it mostly properly assigned. |

Practice, practice practice. Hit a local Battletrax event if you can...or build your own with sand-filled Solo cups in a mall or church parking lot (my fave is two circles about 20-30' in diameter joined by a five or six cone slalom - run a right loop, slalom, run a left loop, repeat; shrink the loop size as your skills increase). Hit a cup, say whoops, clean up your mess and try again. Hit a Buick....maybe don't say much at all. Everybody ride safe!! |

Just missed the photo this morning . . .coming into the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel (longest in America) the gal in the Saturn next to me saw what she apparently precived to be a longer line in the West tunnel and, ignoring the traffic cones she ran over, did one of those instananeous lane changes over the cones in an effort to head toward the East tube. Whack . . . she nailed the Suzuki SV650 sitting next to her. Note the Suzuki did not come alongside as she was making the move, it was already there. She jerked the wheel before she even turned her head to look. I was about 8' from the action. No damage, no injury, just a banged up top-case. Fault? Makes no diff . . . |

It just shows how much we are overlooked. Thanks for reminding me to stay out front. Eyes open and always aware. |
