Hi Everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this.

I've had a Jardin Exhaust and a K/N Filter since I bought my bike with 300 miles. I recently (9K miles) removed all the california emmissions parts (the charcole can, ect.). I had this done by a local reliable shop so I'm sure it was done right. I got the bike 3/8 and rode it home fine, same for friday 3/9. Then Monday 3/11, after the time change, riding home the bike would suddenly cutt off and die. I would hold in the clutch and pull over. I sat there for a minute or so and turned the bike back on. A few minutes later, same thing, I stopped and got gas, then few minutes later same thing.

So it seems to happen in the afternoon, BTW I live in Orange County CA where it tends to be cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon. when the bike turns off 75% of the time I can here the fan running, the other 25% nothing.

When the bike turns of its subtle, it doesnt just die in one sec, you feel the engine cut out and 3 or 4 seconds later it cuts completely.

Since this happens when its hot, my guess is the bike is overheating. But I've heard maybe I'm running lean. btw, I have a stock ECU.

Anyone have any ideas it would be greatly appriciated.

Check the tank vent. Sounds like it's blocked. When that happens, a vacuum develops in the tank and the gas can't flow to the carb.

Tom,
I bet you nailed it, OR, the vent on the throttle body that the emissions was connected to was left open instead of plugged.

Al's Second Rule of Motorcycle Mechanics: Whatever is wrong with your bike is related to the last thing YOU worked on.

Shai said he just farkled with the Emissions canister, so I'd bet it's one of the above.

an update: I noticed that the bike is less likely to shut off if I accelerate smoothly. I did this on the way home yesterday in the heat and got home fine!

The tank vent is open, its been routed to the bottom of the bike with a hard tube. Shop says no way its blocked.

The vent on the throttle is plugged.

Any other thoughts?

Just to ad, I have an 05 xb12R, its EFI, not carb'd

Oh well, it was a good guess.

Al's first rule of Motorcycle mechanics: All problems are a grounding problem until you've proven otherwise.

If you think it's drivable to get it down here this weekend, we can hook it up to VDSTS and do some testing. But can you even drive it here?

Yeah, I'll be there. I've been riding the past 2 days fine with np. My secret: keep it under 4k RPM and no problems and no hard acelleration (pulling the throttle to 6K).

So what day Al, and what time? I can be there at 7AM if you want...

Hey Shaiss, did you fix it?
My 2001 M2 has just started cutting out above 4.5 or 5k. The breather's not blocked... so I was wondering if your solution could help me

In my case we found the problem to be the spark plug cables. As they were too long aftermarket cables and kinked at the connection with the spark plugs.

Also, the spark plug rating was wrong.

Have you had any work done lately?

Nope. Only bought it a few weeks ago. I've mentioned it to the previous owner and he'd not had any problems..... maybe he didn't go above 5k

I spoke to the previous owner and it turns out to be the stupid little switch on the side stand!!

All cleaned and fixed now , but I think I'll cut and solder the wires together at the weekend
