Buell Motorcycle Company Announces Intent to Enter New Motorcycle Market Segment

Buell to Build Off-Road Competition Motorcycles Within Two Years

EAST TROY, WI (March 9, 2007) – Buell Motorcycle Company recently announced its intent to bring an off-road motorcycle to market, specifically designed for closed-course competition.

“We’ve told our dealers about our plans to bring an off-road, closed-course competition motorcycle to market within the next two years,” said Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “This will allow Buell dealers the time needed to make plans to meet the needs of this new market and customer.”

“Harley-Davidson and Buell are highly committed to broadening the range of products we offer and reaching out to new groups of customers,” said Buell President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Flickinger. “We’re always looking at new market opportunities, but this one is particularly exciting.”

No details about the new Buell motorcycle have been released.

I viewed an internal message the other day suggesting to our Buell dealership that we immerse ourselves in the offroad racing scene: Go to local and professional races to check out our new customer base (good idea), read magazines and look at competitors' dirt bikes. Buell is heading in the right direction. As a m/c parts guy with over 13 years of experience (with 6 of the last 7 in an offroad shop), I am like a kid in a candy store. I stepped up to the plate at my dealership and was rewarded with rebuilding the Buell brand (street), parts/acc & apparel, and formulating the plan to jump into the offroad side of motorcycling for the 2009 intro. I hope that I won't be too preachy here in the forum, but be able to give you the latest goings on with everything Buell. I also believe in tricking out floor models to get people excited about what they can do with their babies, so I may ask a few questions when it comes to Buells in the future (what works and what doesn't). I believe BIG things will be happening in 2007, so get a grip and tuck those legs in tight, it's gonna be a heck of a ride!

I myself would love to see a dirt bike made from Buell. I have a KLR 650 I ride in substandard weather and road conditions. I can see myself selling it off to build a street legal off roader with the Buell name. It wouldnt hurt to be back in the dirt too. GO BUELL OR GO HOME!
