So in December I went on reserve at some point.
Shortly there after I filled up, and of course, forgot to put it back on 'ON'.
OOPS!
Today the Cyclone was warming up in front of my building while I was finishing the last 5 minutes of paperwork to close up shop. From the office I heard the thing shut off, which was odd since it was off choke and idling fine! I went out, and it started right up again, but was funny, and I immediately new it was out of gas. I just shut it off and went back in to finish paperwork.
I closed up with two other coworkers and headed outside to see that it was still on reserve.
Good part is, I was only half a block from the gas station... bad part, it's half a block on a 55mph road! AND dark out!
So I decided I was going for it! If there was enough gas (2 drops) left to get me up to 25 mph, I could coast to the gas station no problem!
I walked it up to the intersection, and my coworker pulled up behind me to block cars if I end up walking the bike.
Road was entirely clear, so I hit the starter, and GO! I hit about 15 and it bogged all the way down and promptly shut off.
I coasted down to about 5, which was about half way to the intersection with the gas station, and decided to give it a go again! Giving it some throttle it started up again, so I promptly dropped the clutch to try to get another 10 mph out of it, when.....

WEEEEEEE

Front wheel's in the air! It was only up a foot or so, and for only 5 feet or so, but hey, biggest wheelie I've done.... ever!

That easily got me to the traffic light, which had turned red. The bike shut off immediately after I closed the throttle, so now all I have to do is get 5 more MPH out of it to get across the intersection and into the gas station!

Light turned green, I went over everything in my mind again (In gear, Clutch In, Key On)
Hit the starter, with some throttle, it started again, This time I dropped the clutch and...

WEEEEEE

Did a big burnout halfway across the entire intersection, and pulled right into the gas station, where it sat in front of the pump and idled fine like nothing was wrong!

BASTARD!

So I shut it off, and filled 'er up.

My other coworker (Who wasn't following me) came in to fill up his van, and apparently he watched the whole thing from the parking lot! He thought it was quite funny and was very impressed!

Accidents can be so exciting!! Mine usually hurt.
Okay, now stop and think.....is it still on reserve? I need a flip over sign on my dash--Gas on?/ Gas off?
Mean to turn it off every time I shut it down, cannot remember, if I did, I wouldn't remember to turn it on.

What I always have done, is to reset the trip meter when I fill up. I have rarely even hit reserve, since I have a good idea of how many miles I can get.

I always reset my trip also. I must have disconnected the battery (while installing fog lights maybe?!) after the last fillup, which is why I took a full 5 gallons of gas, yet the trip meter said I had only gone 50 miles.

Usually I'll flip the lever on the fill cap as the "hey dummy, you're on reserve" reminder. On my FLHP, I flip the ignition switch cover. As for putting it back? It only took one day of pushing it 1.5 miles, until a guy with a lawn mower trailer saved me, to remind me to flip it as I'm waiting for the pump receipt to print out. I don't care how light a tuber is...push ANY bike for 1.5 miles, it's heavy. And it sucks. And now my S1W (unlike my old 99 M2) has a gear-drive trip - battery un-affected, LOL.

Based on an experience we had together, one of my ex-girlfriends, who was an avid rider herself, used a label maker and put a sticker on my speedo that simply said..

GAS ON STUPID?

It stayed there for the ten years I owned that bike, outlasting even her : )

My usual error, is when leaving a friends house, and the bike's warm enough for a no choke, no idle time needed start & drive, is to forget to turn the gas on.
Macho take off with red face to come. Usually by 3rd gear. Roaaarr!, Roarrr!, sputter cough, pause...silence....cough, rumble, rumble, slink away!
