I have a Force pipe on my XB9R. (as close to open as you can get I think) I have been told it sounds like a Late Model stock car. I wear earplugs ....and yes I love the sound and the performance. And no, it hasn't cracked. Nick (Message edited by vegasbueller on March 16, 2007) |

i agree with old man, but only when i'm stuck driving my blazer with the windows down or at work with the doors to the warehouse up. then i realize what loud pipes are for. to rub it in to all of us who aren't riding at that moment. a$$hole$!! |

xbullet I like the way you think, I want to because I think its cool and I like the way sounds and people can say i didnt hear you, If I keep the RPM's down it will sound good and it will sound better too So I guess I will start shopping around for a force, Didnt someone take a Jardin and push a straigh pipe through it. Would it sound the same as a true open pipe or would the force be a better way to go? |

"LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES"... it's nice to know that we have such humanitarians amongst the motorcycling community. (u-no "saving lives" every where you go !) soo- it's a "fact" that straight pipes result in a loss of power,a loss of hearing, and a loss of riding areas ! i cain't believe that a drummer or a race pipe isn't "enough attention" for everyone! it must be the "biggest dick" competition--- and the winner usually is "the biggest dick". |

There are powerful forces in this country trying to OUTLAW motorcycles. Just look at CA and WA. Don't help them. |

Those who run straight pipes piss everyone off in earshot. Eventually a crackdown will result and we will all be stuck with the ultra quiet stock mufflers, no exceptions. We have to show consideration for the people around us or we will all pay the price. On the subject of inconsiderate people.- The nitwits with the loud bass systems in their cars. What makes them think everyone wants to hear the crap they are spewing. One of my neighbors used to sit in his car and play it so loud that the pictures on my wall would rattle. I asked him nicely to please turn the volume down. That didn't work.- I then threatened to rip it out and shove it up his a--! Unfortunately, this is what it took for him to turn it down. |

xbullet I like the way you think, I want to because I think its cool and I like the way sounds and people can say i didnt hear you, Sigh... I'm not going to try to dissuade you from running a super-loud pipe (no amount of logic or consideration for others can compete with "cool") but I will point out that it's never a good idea to rely on other motorists seeing or hearing you in traffic. In fact, just this week I watched a driver pull out in front of a coworker of mine (after looking straight at him), and his pipes are loud enough to make small children weep! Always ride like you're invisible and silent. |

"I asked him nicely to please turn the volume down. That didn't work.- I then threatened to rip it out and shove it up his a--!" This just happened to me this weekend. I was in my garage and the neighbor kid was blasting the nuclear sound system in his truck in the driveway. He was basically forcing everyone to listen to his choice of music. I got mad when I was standing right next to him, yelling for him to turn the music down and he never turned around. The music was so loud the little shit couldn't even hear me... so I got within an inch of his ear and screamed at the top of my lungs. He just about jumped out of his baggy pants and crapped. Next time... I'm going straight to his mom... she's a looker and I've been wanting to meet her anyway. |

I'm not a fan of open pipes either. For starters, the power band they create is no good on the street. Second, they are annoying as hell. There's a point when you begin to get diminishing returns when it comes to volume. If the bike is so loud that you have to wear earplugs when you ride it, then it's time for a different pipe. I'd rather be able to hear everyone else than have everyone else hear me. (Message edited by xl1200r on March 16, 2007) |

My My, it sounds like the Spanish Inquistition with all the judgements being passed down soley based on one object of discussion and anothers personal preference. I sure hope you don't need the help of the judeged ones someday. Now I do have a loud pipe, I am happy with it's perfoprance and it will forever more remain on my bike until I get rid of the bike. I have never heard one single complaint about it actually. Why?? because I don't ride like an a*&(hole. I crank my bike up and let it idle for a few minutes before I drive away. I kill it at the foot of the driveway and coast into the garage every night when I get home. It really isn't about the pipes, it is about the rider. Nick |

I have a loud pipe... but not an unbaffled one. Oldman was pretty blunt with his statement and I agree with him, but even he has a louder pipe than stock. Nothing we do is going to please everyone all the time. Some people would complain about exhaust noise no matter how quiet motorcycles are, but open pipes on the street are stupid, irresponsible, and a bit narcissistic... just like the idiots who blast their stereos in their vehicles so it's all we can hear. |

Vegas, I'll be the first to admit that I like loud exhaust on ANY vehicle. Hell, I had plans to put 40-Series Flow Masters on a Cadillac I was looking at buying. BUT...A loud muffler and an open header are two totally different things. I've spent enough time around racecars and the like to know that. A loud throaty muffler sounds good. An open header sounds good for a couple minutes, then it's just annoying. |

Dont be a fool, at least put a muffler on it. There is absolutly no reason not to have a muffler. My Jardine is already pushing the envelope on being to loud. I love loud exhaust, but im also a considerant person. I even try to keep the revs down when there is a car next to me. Come on man, dont ruin it for everyone else. |

Nick The problem is it's a "personal preference" that affects everyone around you. Do you honestly think that just because no one has every voiced their irritation directly to you about your pipes means that they aren't bothered by it? Most folks don't want the confrontation. Instead, when they finally reach their boiling point, they'll start calling the police and politicians. Eventually we, as a group, are going to have to pull our collective heads out of the sand. Folks are getting pissed off by the attention whores and their loud pipes, and are pressuring governments to do something about. And the governments are starting to listen. Already some municipalities are stepping up their scrutiny of motorcycle noise (or are considering it), and many private communities are banning them altogether. This will continue until the loud pipe crowd realizes that they don't live in a vacuum. If motorcyclists want to be more readily accepted by society, we're going to have to start being better citizens. Running an open pipe because it's "cool" does not achieve that goal. |

Roadrailer: Actually, I have been nice enough to ask the close neighbors if I ever bothered them coming and going, and the group answer is NO. I have been to bike events, including Daytona where the noise Nazis live and never had a complaint or a second look. I suppose I could attract more attention by riding in second gear and turning 5 grand all the time, etc. I think you must look at the majority as being considerate and not the outlaws you guys are so quick to make us out to be. By the way, it isn't a straight pipe, it is a Force pipe. And about the earplugs, I wore them no matter what pipe it had. I am pretty much deaf in one ear and it has nothing to do with bikes. DTX, right now I am running the stock ECM and have no complaints except the occasional popping on decel from interstate speeds. As far as these mysterious "dead spots" go. I know not what they speak of as it has plenty of power just as it is. Nick |

"The problem is it's a "personal preference" that affects everyone around you. " And a personal preference for not hearing a loud bike go by is affecting everyone who likes a loud pipe on their motorcycle... That there are people that are so brazen as to say "That guy is an " as they hear a loud bike go by is one of my biggest issues with Americans today. It's pretty well impossible that the person making the complaint doesn't have a habit or two that bother other people whether it be in a more subtle way or not. The fact that they feel the need to be bothered by it (it's a choice) indicates that they feel that the habits they exhibit (whether they know it or not) are somehow less bothersom to other people than the loud pipes are to them. Two things... They aren't, and, it's the classic "I'm better than you" mind set. All that said , we live in a place that has laws. Plenty of minorities (And I don't mean black people...) have used that simple fact to try to turn America into exactly what they believe is the perfect world. Even more? Laws need to be enforced. In Prescott AZ we have no noise ordinance at all. People are generally not a-holes. There are plenty of very nice and reasonably loud vehicles around here. The drivers tend to be gentle with the loud sticks. THAT is what keeps Prescott from being burdened with a noise ordinance a perk. Over in Jerome they have a noise ordinance and signs all over the place saying that it is and will be enforced. I have no idea how many times I've ridden through Jerome with a Force piped 12 and not gotten stopped... even though I ride right by the police station with the Jerome Police Officer just inside of an open door behind a big glass window. He can see and hear me coming and going for quite some time and I don't get stopped. Why? Because I don't go around Jerome rattling the windows of the place. Those that do get stopped and they piss people off. I think you understand where I'm going... If we have the freedom now then why not use it? We may not have it forever. The more people who are responsible with the sound level of a pipe (and the Force isn't exceedingly loud if you're being responsible) the longer we'll have that freedom. Nick - I think the pipe holds up structurally on the 984 alright, but it seems to get destroyed by the 12. Also... Most of the problems I've heard of with the Force (including my own) have been with the Gen1 pipe. I've asked my neighbors about whether or not they're ever bothered by the Force pipe in the mornings or eveneings as well and they've all said no problem. They always say "Why... You keep it quite around the neighborhood anyhow". |

There is a BIG difference between a loud muffler and a wide open exhaust pipe! Most people don't mind the sound of the Harley twin, I enjoy it. But a wide open exhaust is an assault on my hearing and I resent it greatly. Two a--holes with big Harley twins with no mufflers rode by where I was getting gas the other day, the experience was painful to everyone with good hearing. They think they are the coolest but everyone else on the street knows they are a--holes. (Message edited by old_man on March 16, 2007) |

it "IS" a fact that straight pipes result in a loss of power ! . now if you are drag -racing and only concerned with high RPM power there could be an advantage with running straight pipes ! (u-no like top fuel etc.) |
