Okay, here's where I am.... I just got the golds for my bike. 05 XB9R. My Rotor was recently replaced (200 miles ago) it had "some hot spots" not too bad. Anyway, I put em on, broke em in AS PRESCRIBED, and I hear a buzzing... almost a fuzzy sound.

Is this normal?

Plus, I hear some great feedback on the Golds and.... I also hear some bad feedback.

What's the skinny on these brakes? I bought them because, I was tired of the stock brakes and plus I had tried Carbone Lorraines and they were just as bad. So, I had heard all the hulla-baloo about the Golds so I went with it. I feel that there is no "hard" initial bite, which I like, but, will they "peter-out" on me? I ride hard on the weekends. Hard and fast. On the twisties and I use my brakes. So, is this the right brake? I have them on my front and rear. I like the rear. When ever I need to use it... BAM! it's there. I REALLY like the rear brake using the Lyndalls. Front. I've really only put about 40 miles on them, including break in.

But the buzzing noise. That's really bothering me. Is that okay???

Plus, I wanna make this the end-all be-all discussion about the Lyndall Golds. Plus, once I see this thing dying down as a discussion, I will link it on the KV. Just to keep it there if needed.

What do you know about the golds and what do WE need to know if we are thinking about getting them or have them already?

Mark

Think of it as another interesting sound on your Buell.
If people ask just say it is a turbine.

i replaced the front rotor on my S3 last year because of 'pulsing' in the lever - thought the rotor warped. then replaced the pads with lrb gold pads (wish replaced pads before rotor). so far love them, but don't ride the S3 hard.
buzzing sound - could it be from the heat dissipation holes in rotor? thats what i thought. (works for me, anyway)

It's okay if it bothers you, it bothers me too. The BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ never goes away. Couldn't say exactly how many miles I have on them now, but that buzz is still there, and as loud as it was in the beginning.
I'll probably go with a different set next time.

EBC HHs make a most excellent spzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound as you brake, but otherwise they are very quiet

I'm on my second set of Lyndall golds. After the first set, I thought I'd try the EBC's. Mostly because I thought I would stop the buzzing...The buzzing is worth having for better braking & less dust though and I ordered another set of Lyndall's from American Sport Bike...When the buzzing stops, you'll miss it.

My .02ยข

I installed Golds on my 2003 XB9S, when I had about 10,000 miles. I broke them in according to the instructions. I liked them for three reasons:

1. Better brake sensitivity and power
2. Eliminated previously existing pulsation
3. They "cleaned" the rotors and did not leave any further deposits.

I did notice some buzzing. Al Lieghton of American Sport Bike informed me that this was normal.

I put several thousand miles on the pads before I sold the bike, and was very happy with them.

At about 6000 miles on Lil' Blackie, I decided to install the Golds over the winter as I had the bike in a warm shop and the wheels off the bike and disassembled for powder coating.

This time, I honed the rotor with a small brake hone, like the one sold by American Sport Bike for $40. Not sure what I was expecting to achieve by doing this, just seemed like a good idea at the time, and as the rotors were already off the wheels, it was no big deal.

ddd

I put the hone in a drill press and set up a simple jig, ( two pieces of wood vise-griped to the drill table), so a friend could rotate the rotor whilst I applied pressure to the hone. I gave the rotor a light hone on both sides. I doubt I spent more than a half hour on this, and I did not remove every mark left by the original pads.

The result was that after the normal break-in , (ten hard stops from 20 mph and ten hard stops from 40 mph), the brakes work great and the dreaded buzzing is almost non-existant.

Perhaps one or two other brothers could try the hone and report.

It was suggested to me (by someone who should really know) that Lyndalls weren't recommended for tuber back brakes. Sounds like they work great on XB rear brakes, though. I use Lyndalls on the front of my tuber, but I stick with stock rear pads.

I've been running the LRB Gold pads on my Firebolt for some 18k miles now (not the same set, of course).

They lack the initial bite of the stock pads, but other than that they seem to be better in every way. They seem to offer more braking power overall and more feedback than the stockers, especially when warm. They definitely buzz, more so when on the brakes, and they get even louder when they're hot. Then again, I like the buzzing sound so I actually prefer that to the stockers as well. The only strike against the LRB pads is that I did run into some fade at the track. The brake fade was manageable, but I was in the beginner class. I'm not certain how the pads would have held up at a faster pace that demanded more use of the front brake. I've been satisfied with the LRBs for street use, but I'll try a set of the EBCs for my next track event.

Daniel,
That was probably me. It's not that I have anything against the Lyndalls on the rear of either a Tube frame or XB. But for me and probably many others, there are more economical choices for back there. The rear doesn't do all that much anyway, and it's hard to get much heat into the rear if you're stopping correctly. So uneven deposits aren't generally a problem back there. The Lyndalls will work fine there, but so will the EBC or Ferodo's and they're a bit less expensive.

But for the front, for anything but the most aggressive riding, the Lyndalls are the best for me.

I can't remember who told me this but apparently the buzzing is due to the lack of grooves (or channels) on the Lyndalls as opposed to the stock pads which allow air to flow freely between the rotor and the stock pads. The buzzing comes from air passing through the rotors.

I installed Lyndalls on both bikes at the same time, freaked me out at first ( I thought I had installed them incorrectly), but I don't hear the buzzing anymore unless I'm listening for it. The Lyndalls cleaned up all the gunk of my rotors just fine - no more choppy stopping.

Since I ride with ear plugs, I can honestly say I've never noticed any buzzing. I'll try and pay attention next time...

Hey, if you're hearing buzzing, maybe you need a LOUDER exhaust?

I'm ahead of you already. I use the race kit exhaust. Good advice though.

For speculation purposes, how long would it take for the stock pad deposits to be cleaned off by the Lyndall pads?

I can say that I think that all my deposits are cleaned off. I have a strange set of lines on the inner part of my rotor. Think of Saturns Rings. Two lines. That's new since the new pads. But the deposits are gone. The lines are 2 lines in a 1/8 part of the inner most section of rotor.

But, it was pretty noticeable pretty fast, the depositing marks being gone, that is.

The only way to get rid of "saturn's rings" is to resurface or replace pads and rotors. At the same time.
I wouldn't worry. The pads will become closer friends with the rotors in due time.

Does Al have these pads for Tubers? I'll probably be needing new pads after Badness and these appear to be just the ones I'm looking for.

Al... That set of pads you sent me after the LRB Golds...

They worked on the track just fine and seemed to hold up on the Spars...

But : )...

They left a LOT of dust (enough that they would jam the rotor so it wouldn't float) and I used them up in about 5000 miles. At least 3500 of that was running 80 MPH on an interstate not even touching the brakes. I checked them out one day and found (to my horror : )) that there was about .060 pad material left. That was after a weekend of riding quick yet reasonable pace (about like the springfast ride we were on). I think I used the last 1/3 of the material on that ride because I had checked them no more than two weeks before that...

I can honestly say that I think I would like them for the track, but too much dust for the street and I really do like the initial bite of the stock and EBC HH pads.

I've just picked up a set of the EBC's and will be doing a trackday with them... I'll let you know how I think they compare with the "replacement" set (were they LRB "HH" pads?) on the track.

To be honest I still think I liked the stock pads the most, but I haven't used them in quite some time.
