Rempss - I really am an idiot about how this works - you just keep scrubbing until the finish smooths out, and then apply the polish? Let me ask you this too - will this process work for the stock shifter and brake pedals? They have a dull, flat aluminum finish but other than that, I have no complaints. At least not enough to part with the kind of cash the aftermarket setups cost. Will they polish up and shine or will that only work on the stainless header? | ||

Kevin, Dude! You simply polish it (rub it out). Not a big deal. Simply get some super fine steel wool (#0000 or finer if you can find it). Then put a little polish on the steel wool and rub the s h i t out of it, then buff it off with a clean rag. I never had to switch to different grades of anything, just #0000 steel wool pad. I clean the chrome on my other bikes all the time with #0000 steel wool and have never scratched the chrome, so it won't hurt the header. BTW, I'd get some Wenol (instead of Mothers)too. I'm not knocking Mothers in the slightest, but Wenol absolutely kicks ass on anything. Keep in mind that a little Wenol goes a LONG ways. In other words, it don't take much. Same thing goes for the steel wool. I did my whole header with one steel wool pad. BTW for more information on polishing other components (aluminum etc.) on your ride, you might try this site. Yes it will work on all metal parts, but the rougher parts, like the shifter etc.,will require starting with sandpaper, then several grades of polishing compound on a bench grinder cloth wheel or equal. I have polished a lot of my cast aluminum parts & the Millenium aluminum pegs recently, these things will come to a mirror finish if you work at it. Another good source of polishing gear for alum and ss. I bought spiral and loose buffs and coumpound from them. Quality stuff. Check them out here. BrightWorks Their large compound sticks are industrial size. Should last for MANY polishing sessions. | ||

Thanks to all who replied! I knew it was possible to polish your own stuff, I just didn't know how or where to start, and didn't want to screw up the finish on these parts by doing it the wrong way and with the wrong stuff. Most of my buddies buy this stuff and bolt it on their bikes...I think I'll enjoy it more knowing I did it myself. Again, my thanks. | ||

I was wondering if anyone could help out? I 'm in the process of removing my tailsection on my 00'M2. I have everything loose except the wiring harness and I can't figure out if I should take my turn signals off to free it up, any help would be appreciated. | ||

Mick: You will need to unplug the tail-light wiring harness connection near the ECM (right side near oil tank) and be sure to remove the tie wrap that fastens the now disconnected wiring harness to the tail support frame. Of course the four fasteners need to be removed too (as you have already likely done). Then loosen the fuel tank retainer bolt and voila, she should come free; no need to remove the turn signals. | ||

Cyclonemick, You could also remove the tail light and disconnect the wires for the lights there. That's what I did. | ||

I've done it both ways. It's mucho easier to unplug just the harness versus all the tail lights/turn signals. You just need a spare tie wrap when reassembling. | ||

Thanks to the both of you for your insight. Although I will not have time to look at it until friday due to the fact my bike is garaged at a buddies,(appartment living sucks). One more question? I only had about twenty minutes yesterday to really look at it but is the license plate bracket actually bolted on to the tail section? I did not see any bolts but like I said I had really no time to really investigate. I just figured I would get all the info I could before I make it back over to pull it off. Thanks again for the help. | ||

Mick, The license plate bracket is mounted using the same four fasteners under the seat that hold the tail section down. When you disconnect the lights as per Blake's suggestion, and remove the fasteners, it will all come off. | ||

Regarding stickers and such bubbling on tanks, due to gas vapors passing through the material, this is, perhaps, a question already asked and answered . . .but . . . .. there are prodcts used to seal tanks that, at one time, was refered to as Gorrilla Snot . . . generally a two-part, extremely viscous fluid that you'd pour into your tank, sloch around, pout out, aallow to dry, and trust that pinholes and other, ehem, wear points might once again hole the gas in the tank, rather than drippining on your knees and exhaust (always!) would a similar product help seal the Buell tanks? | ||

Stuff I've seen and used is called "Kreem." I highly doubt it would adhere to the nylon tank though. | ||

The Kreem people(I while ago I called them) do not recommend their product in plastic tanks. You could try it though and see what happens! | ||

Blake and others, What is your experience with Kreem? I have heard complaints from unreliable sources (you know - guys that really know how to drink beer, but can't read) about the product clogging the fuel system, but never heard from a person with a brain. Bomber, I wouldn't try a sealing product in our plastic tanks without consulting a product rep first. |
