My daughter is almost 5 years old and in WA state you can ride them on your bike at this age. Just curious if others have taken their young kids on their bike and how they did it. Thanks | ||

Unfortunately in CA they have to be 12 or older. If I was in WA and my kid was big enough to rest her feet on the passenger pegs I would have no problem taking her for a short slow ride every now & again. Well.. maybe more often than that. Well.. maybe every time the mom wasn't looking  | ||

Well nice part is there is no mom around. I might have to move the foot pegs up for her to reach. She is a normal sized kid so not to big nor small. (Message edited by wildman4x4nut on March 01, 2007) | ||

Wow, I can remember my cousins and I riding on the metal tanks of my Dad's and Uncle's bikes when we were that age. We would hold onto the handle bars. Looking back, that probably wasn't the smartest thing we did. At least we had helmets on... (Message edited by phantom5oh on March 01, 2007) | ||

And 12R those love love handles look WRONG I agree, they look ridiculous but if my kid could reach the pegs (I totally agree with you there as well) but couldn't wrap her arms around me, I wouldn't hesitate to look the fool and strap that puppy on  I'll never let my kid get away with the stuff I did. I remember going for rides on my Brother's bike when I was little. Feet dangling, no helmet and of course the big bro had to go full throttle open all the time. (He did have an image to uphold after all). There was a few times I was almost dragging elbow  Looking back, I'm not quite sure how the hell we didn't end up messed up or dead. But needless to say, it locked in my obsession with motorcycles. | ||

My Son has been able to reach the pegs on the wife's CityX for a year now. I've taken him on a couple of rides. The last ride, he FELL ASLEEP. Be careful with the young'ins on the back. | ||

I took my boy for his first ride when he was 6 on the back of a 96 zx9 I had at the time. A slow ride around our neighborhood. He's been hooked ever since. When he was younger I always made him recite the rules of the bike before we went for a ride...feet always on the pegs, always hang on to dad and no sudden movements. Properly fitting boots, gloves, jacket and helmet mandatory of course. | ||

Evidently, falling asleep is a big problem with little kids. I read a letter in a cycle mag about a Goldwing rider who had his ~5 year old son fall asleep on back of his bike. One of his feet slipped against the rear wheel and was pretty badly injured by the time dad got stopped. | ||

I cringe when I see people riding small kids around... but my first ride on a motorcycle was on the back of a Triumph when I was 6 years old. | ||

Our daughter was 8 when she started taking short rides with her Dad. One thing I always insisted on (after all the gear) was that she ride the bike with a backrest. The key is short rides and/or frequent stops. The hardest thing at this age we found is appropriate gear. | ||

I take my 10 year old on my Uly all the time. For me the rule of thumb is, feet must reach pegs, must have sissy bar, and finally a grag strap or saddlebags with handles on em like the Uly, and of course helmet for youngster, longsleves, and jeans. | ||

i think like most my addiction started with riding on my dads bike...on the tank no helmet...oooh those were the days eh....my daughter is 14 she's been riding with me for years...my rule of thumb was...when she was old enough to understand the ramifications of riding on a bike then she could....i explained to her in detail what could possibly happen...she has the best gear money can buy but that just wont save u sometimes...and low and behold last summer some dingbat in a cadillac pulled out in front of us not looking of course and we almost bit it hard....after i caught the wonderful lady and had a nice chat with her about how she almost took out a 13 year old girl we went for coffee and re-evaluated what can happen through no fault of ur own on a bike...she still loves to ride with me whenever she can but very much understands that is a dangerous undertaking. just my way of doing things...nuthin better than giving ur kids the fever...good gear and a talk about what riding on a bike means and a little bit about what to do if something goes sideways and how to communicate while riding with hand signals and taps on the back. | ||

I don't have any kids yet, but for you XB owners with kids that have trouble reaching the pegs, try swapping your passenger peg mounts for a set off of an '03 model. On the '04 models Buell changed the passenger peg mounts to lower the peg position by an inch or two. The change was welcomed by my wife, but for kids the old peg mounts might work better. | ||

I have on 03 and my kids can reach the pegs no problem, if anyone wants to swap, drop me a PM. I still want the passenger pegs on though as I use them for crash bars! | ||

I remember riding on the tank on my dads custom built electraglide. That was fun. I kept falling asleep on the back so he tied down a milk crate, put a pillow in it and I could fall asleep back there. I was pretty small back then, couldn't come close to fitting now! haha It's different now-a-days and safety is more of an issue but the addiction does start very young! | ||

my kids are 8, and 10, and can reach just fine. A couple of words of caution, based on things I've seen on the road. 1) small kids have issues with neck strength vs weight of a helmet 2) GEAR is a BIG problem for small kids - I eventually bought kids off road armor, and custom stitched it into oversized jeans, and leather jackets for them. 3) communication: invest in even a cheap rider-passanger setup, so the little guys can talk to you, just in case something goes wrong. pics are too big to post - so here's a link http://farm1.static.flickr.com/136/360775064_2decd 0464e_b.jpg | ||

My son has been riding with me a couple years now. He was 8 when he started riding with me. He is very tall for his age about 5 feet tall now. He rode with me on my 9S and now my 12R and loves it. I don't take him for long rides though. His attention span is not that long. | ||

I also live in WA. Tacoma area. My son is six and he rides with me on my KTM 300 EXC off road. I've taken him around the nieghborhood on my Uly. He sits on the tank on both bikes. He loves it. I'm very careful on the Uly on the street. We do quite a bit of riding off road still being very careful and not in crowded areas and always with helmet gloves and boots. |
