SuperTrapp customer service : while some of us enjoys the UP side of ST's customer service (new IDS for free), I'm experiencing their DOWN side... My ST IDS broke a few weeks ago ; ST proposed a free exchange but it can't work as I have the race header. I'm trying to repair and improve my old IDS but unfortunately the ST distributor in France doesn't distribute all ST spare parts. Therefore I've asked ST if they could sell straight to me those parts. No answer...

So I try on the forum : anyone out there who could recommend to me a ST distributor accepting visa card payment from overseas and who would have spare parts ? Specifically I'd like to buy a second 4" rear clamp (to limit the muffler freeplay) and a Snuff'R not end cap. Thanks in advance for your input.

Jerome,
I think you have companies confused. The Snuff'R not end cap is for White Brothers mufflers not Supertrapps. I think what you want is the open end cap for your Supertrapp.

WB makes the Snuff'R not end cap for Supertrapps as well.

Yes Peter, this is what I saw previously. Henrik, you're right, Tat at ASB has the parts and will ship them to me. Really great service there. It's a pity that the french distributor for ST parts is so useless... I ordered 4" disks and they sent to me 3" versions... Speak about service...

By the way, anyone having experience with the Snuff'R not end cap ? In the open position, it compares to how many "additional disks" in terms of noise ?

Peter and Jerome,

My mistake, But I question the usefullness of that cap in a Supertrapp IDS since the discs are enclosed. I think that cap is designed for themore traditional trapps with the exposed discs. Seems like it would be a lot of work to open and close it each time

Hey Jim ... sounds to me like you need an open end cap...though that'd probably make sound a bit more stout than the V&H.

Hey guys,

What the f*ck, do I have bad breath or something? I wasn't kidding about needing help with the SuperTrapp on the RR1200 in my posting above. Surely there's someone here that has actual experience with them. Is there packing inside that puppy that can be removed to make it LOUDER? There's 15 disk(s) on it now, and I'm not satisifed with the sound.

Cheers,

Jim,
The open end cap isn't a joke. It really gives a nice sound and performance. Most folks say if you don't use the open end cap then you should shoot for around 18-22 discs.

Dan,

I did read Rick(s) post above, but I thought he was pulling my leg. I also wasn't kidding about running 22 or so disc(s), cuz it would probably end up hitting the rear tire. It would probably look like some sort'a damn heat exchanger hanging on the end of the muffler too.

Thanks,

Buellidan : my plans are to install on the tuneable end cap a tiny electric motor connected through thermally insulated wires to a switch on the handlebars, so that I can adjust the sound when riding. Cops around or quiet suburbs ? Closed. No cops and in the middle of the countryside ? Wide open.

Jim,

The trapp that you have has fiberglass packing around the core. you could remove it but a) it will sound crappy and b) it is a pain to get it back in properly. My vote would be to go w/ more discs, an open end cap or both.

not Buell specific, but a perhaps-useful data point . .. .

when I removed the f-glass packing fomr the 'trap on my thumper (which was running like a r#ped ape previsouly), the performance really went downhill . . .

midrange lowered alot (seat of pants), and it developed a horrible case of megaphonitis . . . . . .

I'd just add more disks, if I was you . . . .besides, it's easier

Jim,

Here's what you need:
Supertrapp 4" with Open End Cap

You can get all the parts pertaining to these Supertrapp systems through most automotive speed shops...I got mine through Summit Racing. It's only $12...and nevermind the "For Closed Course Competition Only" stamped on it! I needed something to mount on the new race header, 'cause I couldn't bear reducing it to 2" to get my V&H to work.

Hey guys,

What's the story on the Supertrapps? Obviously there have been a few failures out there. Does it apply more to the IDS or the megaphone style? What are the advantages/differences between the two? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I took a day trip to Stainless Specialities in Sebastian Fl this week and had them design and build a Stainless Steel muffler to fit my Pro Series Race Header. The specs for this custom build are: a 4" OD can with a straight thru 3.0" diameter perf core surrounded by ceramic packing. The smaller the outlet size, the more backpressure that forces more gasses thru the packing...thus a larger than orignal (2.5") will give less backpressure, more performance and yes more noise.

The pipe will be polished with a 2.5" ID expanded inlet to clamp to the race header collector. The can length is 13.5", with 2.5" of inlet stub length 2" long expanded bent thru 90 degreees like the daytona boss.

Hopefully it will be ready on Friday and I'll install and test over the weekend.
My goal is to compare my dyno results with that of the D&D muffler. The D&D dyno runs show a 98 S1W set up just like mine. Currently I get 89.6 HP with the Stock pipe and Daytona Boss. It will be interstering to compare.

Hey Donn,
That's exactly what I was gonna do. Though I was gonna go for a little less noise, and only a 30 or 45 degree exhaust bend.

But seeing as how you are there, it's easier for you to be the guinea pig. I'm waiting with baited breath for your pics and results summary.

Cost? Rear Hanger Details?

One caution: the old supertrapp had a clamping rear hanger and front attachment. With just clamp action, you run the risk of the thing moving backwards, dropping and pole-vaulting you. Wouldn't be a bad idea to at least adopt the ST rivet thru the inlet stub/collector, under the clamp.

Anyone who has heard the D&D vs Boss?
How do they compare sound wise. I know they both perform, just wondering about the exhaust "tone".
I prefer the deeper throaty sound, not the popping, raspy sound of a V&H.
I have heard the Boss (I like it), but not the D&D.

Which slipon is louder? I want a bit more than my modified stock unit but way less than a Force.

Thanks
Brad

Al, great minds eh ? Actually I got the idea from reading one of your posts in October and it fit what I've wanted for a while. The chance came when I've broken the second front clamp for my Boss. You made a good point about the pole vault, I will look again at the clamp mount for the front hanger, thanks.
Ever since I got the Boss I've wanted to fit a Race header to it. The chance came when I finally got my hands or a race header. Cost:$0.0 Of course it was in two pieces cracked apart at the collector. A supremely gifted SS welder locally here made it whole again for only $45.00 Voila !

Blake, the custom can cost me $150.00 and a 12 pack of miller lite. The price quoted to Al is $189.00

Brad, the Boss is very nice. Of course I'm biased sice I have one but have not yet heard the D&D. thier web site has a sound file

http://www.sporttwin.net/sound/Mvc-001v.mpg

I'll post info on my project asap.

I too have the Boss S/O pipe. Love the sound. When in town it's a deep throaty mellow sound. Yet when out in the hills where one can open up the sound gets even better. I leave the bike out front of the garage to warm up every morn and have yet to have neighbor complain. Yet wife knows when I make the turn down the street for home. Have little over 4K miles on pipe w/ zero problems. Good luck w/ choosing

SuperTrapp will probably be at the Long Beach IMS this weekend. Are there any questions from the group I can ask the rep?

Myself, I have an old style megaphone for the 96 S1 that I bought new in 96. It has broken/cracked 2 header pipes because it lacks a front mount, so I took it off. I want to know if I can trade or upgrade it for a newer style megaphone or IDS.

Well I took a week longer that I planned to even start but a morning in the garage and its done.

I'm off to do a Dyno run in a few minutes. Seat of the pants ....very noticible increase in torque and midrange power.

If you have heard and liked the Daytona Boss before you will really like Stainless Specialties Race Muffler sound. I was almost afraid that going from 2.5 to 3 inches would be ubnoxiously loud. It is not ! Bass vs barritone. Sweet.

Here is a pic of the Buell race pipe and Stainless Specialties Race Muffler

A huge 4" diameters with a 2.5” collector inlet to 3” ceramic core, lifetime warranty no repacking ever, with a 3" outlet at 90 degree turnout. 13.5 inches in length. 1.5 lbs lighter than the Daytona Boss.
