I need a little help. My Uly won't start. About a week ago I tried to start and had trouble starting it in the cold. I gave it a little throttle and it started to backfire. After playing around a little with the throttle it started up to get into the garage. Later in the day I tried to start again and it backfired a couple times then would not start at all. I thought I may have flooded it. I took to a friend's that works for Harley but can not work on Buells at the the dealership. He checked the plugs and coil and says both are ok. Could it be a sensor that is bad causing the bike not to fire? My closest dealer is 2 hours away and don't want to make the trip and leave the bike then have to go again. Any suggestions or just take it in and deal with it? The bike has 14k on it and has had regular oil changes and inspections but no other service done to it. Please help if you can, I miss riding here in Alabama when the weather is good to ride. Thanks, |

Did you check the battery? Some folks have reported theirs going tits up early. |

Not sure if he checked it or not. But I will ask. |

There is a new recall on the Bank Angle Sensor. I don't have any information other than what was in my letter. It's for the ULY's and causes the engine to quit. ... Contact your dealer. ... Terry |

You fouled one or both of the plugs. Never give it gas on startup. |

When you get it running again, make sure your idle shows about 1000 on the tach. When I got my Uly, it always showed about 750. Wow the bumpa bumpa idle was fun. You felt alive! However, once it started getting down to the 30's and 20's, it was hard to start. I'd have to try 2-3-4 times and hold the starter a long time. So, finally, once day, after getting it running and after it warmed up and I rode it around for a while, when I got back home I adjusted the idle to about 1000 on the tach and it has started up easy/great every time since. So, once you get yours running again and warmed up, check your idle and see if that helps the next time you start it. And like Chadley said, when you are starting it while the engine is cold, when you press the starter button, DO NOT give it any throttle/gas. Let it idle for a minute or two. Rick |

Ok dumb question but how do I unfoul the plugs. Do I need to just remove and dry them out or replace completely? |

+1 for replacing the plugs. Also check your plug wires for abrasion, and make sure they are on tight on both ends. |

You fouled one or both of the plugs. I agree. Replace plugs. |

This morning I had to give my gas to get it started. I tried about 6 times without gas and it didnt want to fire up. 25 degrees this morning but when starting it up after work yesterday(55f) I had the same problem. I have to give it a touch of gas to get it started. |

Ok dumb question but how do I unfoul the plugs. Do I need to just remove and dry them out or replace completely? If your friend actually checked the plugs (removed and examined them) like you mentioned earlier, he should have noticed if they were fouled. |

Did you see the thread I started called "Won't Start...Plugs are REALLY hard to get to..." I had the EXACT same symptoms...Replaced the plugs and it fired up on the first try. Like others have said, DON'T give it any gas while starting it...EFI and the computer does it all... |

But what if its not doing it job? I have to crack the throttle just a hair to get it to start. Whats the fix before you foul? |

Snow, I have the same issue. Once I installed the K&N and the '07 lid, I have to blip the throttle right as the bike fires for it to turn over. After that it is fine. Only happens in the really cold weather too. As long as you are not opening the throttle a lot you should be ok. ONce the weather is warm or the bike has been run at least once that day, it starts on it's own. It may be fuel injected, but it is not extremely high tech fuel injection. |

Ok, Now I need some information on how to take the air box off the top of the frame. I have it unbolted but the funnel that goes through it seems like it has to be removed before taking it off or you ruin the seal. Hope someone can tell me. I also have the service manual on order but not sure if I will get today to be able to start on it tomorrow. Thanks, Brian |

I fixed same problem by adjusting the idle to over 1000 rpm, my idle was at @ 700 and unless it was warm the bike wouldn't start properly. The idle adjstment screw is located by the air scoop on the front right side of the bike. I hope it's that easy for you. |

IF you're just changing the plugs, no need to remove the airbox cover IMHO. Doesn't give you that much more access to the rear plug. Given the PITA the plugs are to get in and out, replace them rather than clean them. Might try just the front, when I did this DaveS said it was most often the front plug that fouled. This did the trick for me. As far as cold starting, if you need to blip the throttle the idle is set too low. The ECU can control idle a wee bit. Tweak the idle screw a half a turn or so up (idle might rise up a bit), shut off the bike, then start it again (on my bike the idle is back at "spec". |

I would like to thank you all for the help. Received the plugs in the mail today changed out and first hit of the button and she started right up. Now I have another problem. The guy that worked on the bike has screwed up my throttle. I know this because the controls bracket was loose on the bike. The bike runs great as long as I don't give it more then 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Anyone know what I can do to correct this. I have adjusted the throttle control cable and the idle. She idles around 800 to 900 rpm. Please help need to make my baby run good again. Thanks, |
