My exhaust nut vibrated off (the one that connects to the stud in the head). Anyone know what type of thread that is? I need to pick one up today. Thanks. |

Rear header? Mine fell off at one point too. I found it several thousand miles later on top of the tranny case Fish around with a magnet on a coathanger wire. It might still be "with you" |

i use a product called stage 8.. and pretty much swear by them.. it is a nut and a locking plate that goes over the nut and rides against the exhaust pipe . then a small snap ring is clipped into the grove in the nut to hold the clamp on.. i really like this product because once you torque down the exhaust nuts you put this product on.. you never have to worry about it vibrating loose or off. and the other plus is that it prevents people from re torquing ,, re torquing,, re torquing,, pop,, broken stud...

Have you upgraded your front exhaust mount with the new part? It looks like an upside down Y. Its pricey until you compare it with the agony of a broken header stud, then it's the best money you ever spent. You can buy the studs and the nuts at a Harley or Buell shop. Might want to consider replacing both studs, the one opposite the one that lost a nut might be weakened, and won't get any stronger with time. |

What Reepi said. the studs and nuts are sportster parts I believe X1 stud # 16715-83 x1 nut # da0500.12fz gasket in head (2) 65324-83a YMMV the numbers are from the X1 parts book. I removed the studs by doublenutting and applying red lock tite and then removing with 1/2" air impact, None broke, to be replaced again in 2 years. |

Thanks for all the feedback and tips. I didn't upgrade the front exhaust mount and the existing mount looks like a letter "L". The tabs on the muffler clamp on the outside of the exhaust mount bracket. Happen to have a picture of what the new one should look like? |

the new mount looks like an upside down Y with rubber bushings at the bottom that the mounting bolt passes through

Best solution for tourqin your nutz. Tourqe to spec. Take bike on a five mile ride around the 'hood. When you get back home immediately snug up the exhaust nuts. Nothing to dramatic just another turn or two. I have been doing this for years and have never lost nor broken a stud or nut ::nock on wood:: |

Double-nutting without loctite and trying to use a hand ratchet won't work at all. I haven't had a problem with stud breakage or nut loosening (at least not on my bike) for 7 years. |

I have use standard nuts in the past but much prefer the nuts that harley uses. They stay put with less force. Joe |

I retorque the header nuts on a regular base,every other ride or so. Since then,I never lost them nuts again,after I lost them two times on my XL years ago. I would definitely favour the stage 8 nuts,but here in Germany they are absolutely overpriced. Ralph |
